The Tampa Bay Rays have recalled right-hander Chris Archer from Triple-A to start against the Cleveland Indians.
Archer was 5-3 with a 3.93 ERA in 10 starts at Durham. He was 1-3 with a 4.60 ERA in six appearances last season with Tampa Bay. Archer was selected by Cleveland in the fifth round of the 2006 draft and traded to the Chicago Cubs in 2008. The Rays acquired him from the Cubs in 2011.
Left-hander Alex Torres was also recalled from Durham on Saturday to pitch out of the bullpen.
Lefty Jeff Beliveau and right-hander Josh Lueke were optioned to Durham. Beliveau was called up Friday but didn't appear in the game that was delayed by rain three times and ended shortly before 3 a.m. Lueke pitched two scoreless innings in the Rays' 9-2 win as four pitchers combined on a one-hitter.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. The Tampa Bay Rays placed reliever Brandon Gomes on the 15-day disabled list before starting a three-game series with the San Diego Padres on Friday.
The right-hander has a right lat strain, which he began noticing early in a series against the Colorado Rockies last Friday through Sunday in Denver. He pitched 13 of an inning in both the Friday and Saturday...
Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Alex Cobb had an unusual fourth inning, to say the least, in Friday night's game at Tropicana Field against the San Diego Padres. Not only did Cobb strike out four batters in the inning, but he gave up a run in the process.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. Each person has a story, each a memory. Thats partly why Evan Longoria was one of more than 6,000 participants at the Miles for Moffitt event Saturday in Tampa, Fla., which raised money for research at the Moffitt Cancer Center.
No one is unaffected. No one is untouched. No one is above being inspired.
A lot of touching stories, the Tampa Bay Rays third...
Rays reliever Brandon Gomes has been placed on the 15-day D.L., according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.

Gomes was 0-1 in 14 games this season with a 5.40 ERA.
Lueke has pitched well in the Minors this season. He carries a 2-0 record...
One swing of Evan Longoria's bat erased another night of frustration for the Tampa Bay Rays.
Longoria hit a two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning off Padres closer Huston Street on Saturday night, rallying the Rays to an 8-7 victory over San Diego.
Street (0-2) retired the first two batters in the ninth before walking Ben Zobrist on a full count. Longoria...
Alex Cobb became the first pitcher in MLB history to strike out 13 batters without making it through five innings. Cobb gave up three runs on five hits with two walks over 4 2/3 innings, but ultimately his pitch count got out of hand and he left the game after 117 pitches. Tampa Bay pitching went on to strike out San Diego batters 18 times.
That ended a streak of 34 straight...
The Tampa Bay Rays were one away from a crushing defeat when Evan Longoria smashed a two-out home run in the bottom of the ninth to beat the San Diego Padres 8-7.
Tampa Bay led 6-2 most of the game but lost the lead in the seventh when Jesus Guzman hit a pinch-hit grand slam to tie the game. For Longoria it was his ninth home run of the year and he is hitting .336 with...
Personally, one of my favorite shows from the 1980's was "Alf".
So, when Deadspin's Timothy Burke found video of someone dressed in an Alf costume performing the "80's Cap Shuffle" on the Tropicana Field video board, it needs to be shared with the world:
Alex Cobb struck out 13 in less than five innings and Ryan Roberts and Ben Zobrist drove in two runs apiece to help the Tampa Bay Rays rally for a 6-3 victory over the San Diego Padres on Friday night.
Cobb became the first pitcher in major league history to fan that many batters and fail to make it through the fifth. The right-hander left after throwing 117 pitches. He recorded...
Tampa Bay’s Alex Cobb gets a dropped third strike facing Will Venable, who in turn reaches base. He then proceeds to strikeout the next 3 batters. Unfortunately for Cobb, Venable swiped two bases and scored on a balk in between the punch outs.
