ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Outfielder Wil Myers was out of the lineup Tuesday against the Minnesota Twins, a move made to keep the rookie fresh, Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon said. Myers has hit .247 (21 for 85) with three home runs and 13 RBI in 21 games since making his debut in the majors June 18 against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. Maddon said he considered giving Myers a day off Thursday against Minnesota at Tropicana Field, but he anticipated Myers faring better against that day's starter (right-hander Mike Pelfrey) than right-hander Kyle Gibson, the Twins' starter Tuesday. Maddon also said he wanted to find a spot to use infielderoutfielder Kelly Johnson, slotted to bat seventh and play left field Tuesday. "I'm not worried about Wil at all," Maddon said. "It's just a matter of getting everybody involved, keeping everybody fresh. I don't care what their birth certificate says. I was just trying to figure out the best day for him, s...

Matt Joyce the latest member of Rays' swarming offense

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- "Swarm" has been the buzzword of late within the Tampa Bay Rays. It is a catchy and appropriate term used to describe what their offense has become recently: An efficient, consistent attack that has sparked a run that includes six consecutive wins, 10 victories in their past 11 games and 13 triumphs in their past 16 to lift them to sole possession...

Luke Scott keeps up hot play with interesting hair style

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. It would be convenient to credit the rattail. Luke Scotts quirky hair design, which looks like something gifted from the 1980s, does not hold mythical powers or mysterious sources of strength. But there is something odd, interesting cool about Scotts style choice, which made its debut at the start of the current 10-game homestand last Friday. His recent numbers...

PETA to Rays: Close the touch tank

Tampa Bay Rays fans of all ages enjoy seeing and petting the rays at Tropicana Field’s touch tank. The tank, which was opened in 2006, has been a fan favorite at the ballpark. But now, after just the second home run ball to land in it, PETA has a problem with it. The organization, who has an issue with anything that has to do with animals taken out of their natural habitat or being...

PETA Asks Tampa Bay to Close Outfield Ray Tank After Miguel Cabrera Home Run Lands in It (Video)

The Tampa Bay Rays’ aquarium-style “touch tank” in center field is one of the few unique aspects of much-maligned Tropicana Field. But since Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera crushed a home run into the open tank two weeks ago, the exhibit — which contains live cownose rays — has come under scrutiny. A representative of PETA sent a strongly worded letter to Rays senior vice president...

Rays Fan Makes Incredible Two-Hand Catch of Pedro Florimon Home Run (GIF)

A Tampa Bay Rays fan made possibly the defensive play of the night on Wednesday when he caught a Pedro Florimon home run ball. Florimon went yard to right field in the third inning off of Rays pitcher Jeremy Hellickson, and there was a fan in the right place at the right time. The caught the ball with a two-handed bare-hand grab as it descended toward him. To be fair, there weren’t...
