The Red Sox had their chances early & often but they were just unable to capitalize on the opportunities and the Sox get shutout by the Tigers, 3-0. They had Tigers pitcher Doug Fister on the ropes early. In each of the first two innings, he walked the first two men he saw but was able to work out of it by inducing a double play both times. From then on, Fister was able to regain some composure and control the Sox lineup.  What makes it worse is that the Sox waste yet another solid John Lackey outing. Lackey allowed just three hits in the first six innings but got into some trouble in the seventh, allowing a lead-off single to Victor Martinez and a deep triple into the triangle by Andy Dirks to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. After an Omar Infante walk, Lackey was able to induce a double play but Dirks was able to score to make it 2-0. The Sox had a chance in the bottom of the inning as Daniel Nava managed to get the first of his two doubles of the day and Mike Napoli drew his second walk and it appeared that the Sox were going to conjure some of their late inning magic.  Yet for reasons beyond comprehension, Jarrod Saltalamacchia laid down a poor sacrifice bunt as Detroit's catcher Alex Avila caught it on one bounce and got the force out at third. Fister then managed to get both Stephen Drew & Will Middlebrooks to ground out to get out of his final jam. His final line: seven innings, four hits, four walks, & four strikeouts.  The Tigers were able to get a sac fly in the 8th to make it 3-0 and it was just icing on the cake. The Sox did manage to get runners in scoring position in the 8th & 9th but were unable to capitalize. The stars were Daniel Nava, who finished 3-3 with two doubles and John Lackey who went 7 1/3 innings, allowed seven hits & three earned runs. This is the sixth time he didn't recieve any run support and has pitched into the seven inning 15 straight times. What a difference Tommy John surgery makes.  Box Score
