Boston Red Sox
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Mike Aviles looped a soft liner to left field off Texas closer Joe Nathan to drive in the go-ahead run in the ninth inning and lift the Boston Red Sox to a 2-1 victory Tuesday night at Rangers Ballpark. Boston evened its record at 49-49 and the series with Texas at 1-1, while the Rangers fell to 57-39. The three-game set ends Wednesday night. The Red Sox started the unlikely rally with two outs in the ninth inning with a pair of walks against Nathan, who had issued only five free passes all season coming into the game. Aviles fought off a full-count offering from Nathan and knocked it just inches over the outstretched glove of Texas shortstop Elvis Andrus to score Daniel Nava with the go-ahead run. Red Sox closer Alfredo Aceves worked around a two-out walk to Mike Napoli to nail down his 21st save. Vicente Padilla (4-0) picked up the win for Boston after pitching one inning in relief for starter Clay Buchholz, who went strong seven innings and allowed the...
BEST OF MAXIM
Mike Napoli has a history of hurting the Red Sox on the field, but he was sitting out of Wednesday's game in Texas. Whether he was sitting in the dugout or in the stands, however, was a little difficult to determine. NESN cameras spotted a fan at Wednesday night's game with a sign proclaiming his resemblance to the Rangers catcher and we have to hand it to him, he's right...
The game of baseball is usually a pretty safe sport but there are times that pitchers can lose control of balls and the batter ends up paying for them.
During Tuesday night's Rangers/Red Sox affair, Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre was at the plate in the eighth inning facing Boston hurler Vicente Padilla.
In the at-bat, Padilla lost control of a pitch and ended up...
Just like Ben Cherington drew it up in the offseason, RBIs from Kelly Shoppach and Mike Aviles led to Boston's only offense in a pitcher's duel in Arlington.
Clay Buchholz threw yet another strong start. He stifled the Rangers' offense to four hits over seven innings. He did give up one run, and had some command issues, allowing three walks. He also didn't dominate...
Will Middlebrooks had a fun time in Texas. The rest of the Red Sox, not so much. Boston dropped a tough loss on Wednesday to the Rangers, ending a road trip through the Lone Star state on a bad note. Middlebrooks, however, enjoyed a return to his hometown state by batting .500 over the course of the three games. If only the rest of the Sox offense was as hot. In any case, NESN Nation...

Editor's note: The temperature gauge is a Bill James-created statistic that measures how hot or cold hitters are. We will spotlight Red Sox and opposing team temperatures on game days. Maybe Adrian Gonzalez needed to get loose. Whatever it was, the star first baseman for the Red Sox is now hitting the best he has all season. He has the highest mark on Boston's temperature...

Boston general manager Ben Cherrington has gone on the record stating that the Red Sox would consider making sizable moves prior to the July 31st trade deadline.
According to Joe McDonald of ESPNBoston, one such bold move would be the acquisition of ace Josh Johnson from the Miami Marlins.
McDonald writes regarding Boston’s pitching woes: “The Red Sox have scored a major league...
Derek Holland struck out seven and pitched into the eighth inning and the Texas Rangers took advantage of a couple of wild throws by Josh Beckett to score the go-ahead run in a 5-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night.
Elvis Andrus was hit on the left forearm by a pitch to reach with one out in the seventh. He got to third on a single by Adrian Beltre and scored to...
A lot can change over the course of a week, just ask the Red Sox. The Sox were riding high after taking three of four from the first-place White Sox earlier this week, but those good times seem like a distant memory after the Blue Jays came in and bludgoened Boston this weekend. The Red Sox aren't out of it yet, but they'll be running out of time before too long. Onto this...
With the Roy Oswalt battling a back injury, the Texas Rangers threw out Scott Feldman to make the spot start against the Boston Red Sox last night. Feldman had struggled this season but the Red Sox made him look like Cy Young last night in a 9-1 loss.
The only run the Red Sox would manage off of Feldman over his seven innings was a Jarrod Saltalmacchia solo home run in the 2nd...
The rivalry between the Red Sox and Yankees is arguably the most heated and historic in all of sports. When thinking about it, images of Jason Varitek and Alex Rodriguez brawling or Pedro Martinez tossing Don Zimmer probably race through your head. Is it possible to fit Ichiro into the equation? The former Mariners outfielder says he is looking forward to it.
“When I watched those...
For a while, it felt like the Red Sox were being singled out. Boston's dealt with its fair share of injuries in the 2012 season, but as the year goes on, more and more teams are dealing with many of the same problems. The Yankees will be without Alex Rodriguez for a while and the Blue Jays are now coming to grips to life without catcher J.P. Arencibia. That means that not only...
The Cleveland Indians have acquired Brent Lillibridge from the Boston Red Sox for minor-league pitcher Jose De La Torre.
Lillibridge has played every position except pitcher and catcher. He is expected to join the Indians on Wednesday.
The 28-year-old Lillibridge has hit .212 in 295 games for Atlanta, the Chicago White Sox and Boston. He was dealt by Chicago to the Red Sox on June...
The July 31 trade deadline is quickly approaching. With the second wild card added this year, many teams that normally wouldn't be in contention find themselves in the thick of the playoff hunt and the competition for help is getting fierce. The Red Sox may be a .500 team entering Wednesday, but with a new arm in the rotation, they could make a run at a postseason berth. Josh...
