The Boston Red Sox announced Sunday they have hired John Farrell from the Toronto Blue Jays to be their manager. Farrell, who had a 154-170 record in two seasons with Toronto, received a three-year contract through the 2015 season. He was still under contract to the Blue Jays the 2013 season. As compensation, Red Sox sent shortstop Mike Aviles and also received in return right-handed pitcher David Carpenter. "We are thrilled to name John Farrell as our new manager," Executive Vice-President/General Manager Ben Cheringto said in a statement. "John has been a major league pitcher, front office executive, coach, and manager. His broad set of experiences, and exceptional leadership skills, make him the ideal person to lead our team. "I have known him in various capacities throughout my career, and I hold him in the highest regard as a baseball man and as a person." In a sense, it's a homecoming of sorts for Farrell, who was the Red Sox pitching coach from 2007-2010 before he accepted the Blue Jays' job. "I'm extremely excited to be returning to the Red Sox and to Boston," Farrell said. "I love this organization. It's a great franchise in a special city and region, with great fans, and we want nothing more than to reward their faith in us." Farrell reportedly beat out other candidates including Yankees bench coach Tony Pena, Orioles third base coach DeMarlo Hale, Dodgers third base coach Tim Wallach and Padres special assistant Brad Ausmus. The job came open when Bobby Valentine was fired after one season as Red Sox manager. Aviles hit .250 with 13 homers and 60 RBIs in 136 games for the Red Sox last season. Carpenter played for the Houston Astros and the Blue Jays last season. He had 60 strikeouts in 60 innings, compiling a 1-5 record and a 5.70 ERA in his major-league career.
