Seven more to go for new Boston Red Sox GM Ben Cherington to match his counterpart Theo Epstein in avoiding cases going to arbitration. So far he's avoided arbitration with Matt Albers, Andrew Miller and Ryan Sweeney. And now we can add Jarrod Saltalamacchia to the list. The Red Sox avoided arbitration with Salty on Sunday night by signing him to a one-year deal worth $2.5 million. It's a big raise for Salty as he only made $750,000 last year. Salty took over as the every day catcher last year for the Red Sox and did a pretty good job. He got better defensively as the season went on and finished the season hitting .235 with 16 home runs, 56 RBIs and even stole a base. Cherington still has seven more contracts to work out to keep the streak alive. They are Alfredo Aceves, Mike Aviles, Bailey, Daniel Bard, Jacoby Ellsbury, Franklin Morales and David Ortiz. After a breakout campaign in 2011, Saltalamacchia -- who split at-bats with Jason Varitek -- is penciled in to start behind the plate again. But even with his 16-homer, 56-RBI effort last year, he may be forced to platoon alongside Kelly Shoppach or Ryan Lavarnway. Although Saltalamacchia is ready for that possibility...

Cubs fans shower Wood, Epstein with cheers

There was one final introduction to make, and when Kerry Wood stepped onto the ballroom balcony, the crowd came unglued. Clearly, Chicago Cubs fans were glad to find out the veteran reliever is sticking around for at least one more season. They were also embracing the man now in charge, president of baseball operations Theo Epstein. There was certainly a positive vibe as the Cubs...

Cubs 5x5 2012 Prospect Rankings

If Theo Epstein hopes to become the ultimate curse buster, he and General Manager Jed Hoyer will need to build the Cubs from the ground up with a strong farm system. The team has infused the minor league system with talent through trade and the draft in the last 12 months. There is talent here, but most of it has warts of one form or another. Faithful Cubs followers flock to Theo Epstein’s pulpit

For the first time in years, the players were virtually afterthoughts during the longest, busiest day of the annual Cubs Convention. Not even a relatively anonymous group of incoming players representing the Cubs’ least-flashy offseason in at least two front-office regimes could provoke the passions of Cubs faithful Saturday. This time around, all the passion was saved for new...

Red Sox Avoid Salary Arbitration With Ryan Sweeney

When Theo Epstein was the general manager of the Boston Red Sox, he never had one salary arbitration case goes to the arbitrator. And it appears, at least so far, that new GM Ben Cherington is following in Theo's footsteps. After avoiding salary arbitration with Matt Albers, Cherington has now avoided it with newcomer Ryan Sweeney who came over in the trade with Andrew Bailey...

The compensation headache over Theo Epstein’s move from the Boston Red Sox to the Cubs is officially Bud Selig’s problem, turning a minor embarrassment for the Cubs into a potential precedent-setting action for Major League Baseball. Wanted: Somebody to Write Tweets and Facebook Postings for the Chicago Cubs

This is the view from the Wrigley Field press box. It is, and I'm speaking from experience here as this picture comes from my personal archives, one of the best views in all of professional sports. It can also be your office if you're lucky. The Cubs are hiring a Social Media and Public Relations Assistant to help craft a favorable image of the team with the general public...
