The Boston Red Sox, are going to be without the services of another one of their relievers for an extended period of time, after it was determined that pitcher Andrew Bailey, would need season-ending shoulder surgery says Gordon Edes of ESPN Boston. The procedure will be performed by Dr. David Altchek, medical director for the New York Mets and co-chief in the Sports Medicine & Shoulder Service at Hospital for Special Surgery. Bailey said Friday he has a torn capsule, damage to his labrum and a strain of one of the muscles that comprise the rotator cuff. He estimated a recovery period of 12 months. The Red Sox lost their other closer Joel Hanrahan, earlier in the year after he underwent Tommy John surgery, and left-handed specialist Andrew Miller after he tore a ligament in his foot. The injuries don’t appear to be impeding the team though, as they still sit atop the AL East division.

Your Morning Dump...Sox lose, Lester scratched, Drew back, Holt to Pawtucket, Clay seeks second opinion

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. Mariano Rivera has jogged from the right-field bullpen to the Fenway Park mound a number of times in his 18-year career. He's probably never been greeted like he was by the rival Red Sox fans on...

The All-Star Game/Home Field Debate: the arguments, the stats, and possible alternatives

We all remember the 2002 All-Star game. Both teams famously ran out of pitchers, thus ending the game in an embarrassing, unsatisfying tie. Not wanting another episode like this, the following year the MLB decided the game would now determine home field advantage for the World Series. This year marks the 10th anniversary of a so-called “meaningful All-Star game....

Mike Napoli’s Game-Winning Home Run Just Latest in Long Line of Red Sox Walk-Offs This Year (Videos)

There are few greater sounds in the world for Red Sox fans than the first few chords of “Dirty Water” by The Standells. The beginning of that sound, played after every Sox win at Fenway Park, sounds even better when it’s accompanied by deafening applause brought on by a walk-off win. There’s been plenty of that at Fenway this season, as the Red Sox have nine walk-off wins...

Doctor clears Clay Buchholz to pitch

Red Sox righthander Clay Buchholz was in Gulf Breeze, Fla., today to meet with Dr. James Andrews. The verdict? Dr. Andrews agrees with the Red Sox that Buchholz has only inflammation in the bursa sac of his shoulder and can pitch without fear of further injury. “Clay comes back, I think, with a little bit more peace of mind and he’ll continue on the throwing program that’s...

Should the Sox trade Lester?

Conor Frederick Contributing Writer It's no secret that Jon Lester has had his struggles this season. After getting off to a flying 6-0 start, he's been 2-6 with a 6.27 ERA over his last 11 starts, according to CSNNE. Talk about a downhill slide. So, the question becomes do we use him as a bargaining chip in a possible trade? He has a $13 million option for next year, but...

Clay Buchholz to meet with Dr. Andrews in Fla.

After six weeks of false hope and maddening disappointment, Clay Buchholz will turn to the foremost authority on shoulder injuries to determine exactly what is causing his right shoulder to keep flaring. Today, Buchholz has an appointment with Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, Fla. It usually is an ominous sign whenever a pitcher meets with Andrews. But Buchholz’ trip comes at the...

Ryan Dempster Takes Over Jon Lester’s Spot in Rotation As Red Sox Take on Yankees in Rubber Match

Sunday was supposed to be Jon Lester‘s turn in the Red Sox rotation, but his first start since the All-Star break was pushed back until Tuesday night in order to give the lefty some more time off. Instead, it will be Ryan Dempster on the mound for Boston, as the team tries to take the rubber match of a three-game series against the Yankees. Dempster is 5-8 this season with a...
