Here is an example of a fan taking a rivalry way too seriously.A Boston Red Sox fan who was stabbed in the neck by a New York Yankees fan in 2010 has been awarded $4.3 million by a jury after suffering life-altering injuries. The Connecticut jury voted in favor of Monte Freire and against U.S.S. Chowder Pot III, the restaurant in Branford, Conn. where Freire was attacked by Yankees fan, John Mayor.According to court documents, bartenders ignored repeated warnings that Mayor was harassing and attempting to start fights with customers, and kept serving alcohol to the combative Mayor, anyway.Mayor reportedly told Freire that, based on his Boston accent, he wasn't welcome in the restaurant because it was "Yankees territory." Mayor continued to verbally assault Freire and his friends before eventually unleashing a vicious physical attack. The court ruled that the restaurant was liable for Mayor's actions, which resulted in brain injury, a stroke, and impaired speech and vision to the 45-year-old Freire.Mayor was convicted of assault and is currently serving a 10-year sentence.Via Sports Illustrated
