Found September 27, 2012 on Bloody Sox: Yardbarker Blogger Network
By SBRForum.com The Baltimore Orioles are so close, they can taste it. They haven’t been in the postseason for a while but they appear to be in good shape to end that drought. All it takes is one more good week – or one more so-so week – and they’re in. Playing the role of spoiler will be the Boston Red Sox, who could really use a decent finish to head into the offseason with some optimism. It’s been a tumultuous season for the Red Sox and they’ve fallen way short of their expectations but dragging the Orioles down with them should help them feel better about themselves. When Boston visits Baltimore for their weekend series, the O’s will put three pitchers on the mound who all have at least eight wins and have combined for 28 in total. The Red Sox trio has won just 16. The Red Sox will start off with Daisuke Matsuzaka on Thursday night as he takes on Chris Tillman, Friday’s matchup will feature Aaron Cook and Bruce Chen and Saturday’s contest will pit Felix Doubront against Wei-Yin...

Jason Varitek Hopes to Learn, Help Red Sox as Much as Possible in New Role

Jason Varitek's role with the Red Sox isn't quite concrete. Despite being hired as a special assistant to Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington on Thursday, Varitek's position will be a hybrid of front office work and player development. "I don't think there's any one thing," Varitek said of his role in a conference call on Friday. "I'm trying...

Orioles Gone From 2011

Over at CamdenDepot, I take a look at the players the Orioles lost from their organization from 2011 to 2012, and if any are really to be missed: Certainly you have to say that a part of the Orioles' success this year can be attributed to some of the players that Dan Duquette brought in in the off-season. What's a little more interesting, is that as of yet, there...

Varitek named Red Sox special assistant to GM

The Red Sox have named Jason Varitek a special assistant to the general manager. The catcher announced his retirement on March 1 after 15 seasons with the team following a trade from the Seattle Mariners. Jason Varitek Joins Red Sox Front Office

During his interview with Don Orsillo and Jerry Remy the other day, Jason Varitek alluded that he was close to a job with the Boston Red Sox. Then the local media all had their sources tell them the same thing. Had the media listened to the interview, they would have known what was happening. But that would be too easy for them. Anyways, the Red Sox announced on Thursday that...

Orioles, Red Sox Likely Wondering 'Are We There Yet?' for Different Reasons as Regular Season Draws to Close (Video)

The end of the regular season is almost here, and, judging by the pace of Friday's game, it can't get here fast enough. Chris Tillman allowed a leadoff single to Scott Podsednik, but that was all the Red Sox could muster as the Orioles cruised past them in a 2:23 game to win 9-1. It was a needed win for the Orioles as they try to keep pace with the Yankees in the divisional...

The Red Sox Honor Johnny Pesky This Weekend

Johnny Pesky is not in the Baseball Hall of Fame, though he got some support for that honor. Nonetheless, the celebration of his life hosted by the Red Sox here on Sunday had a Cooperstown feel to it. Many former Boston baseball greats were on hand to be part of the occasion. Hall of Famers Carlton Fisk and Jim Rice were there. Likely future Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez was there...

Could Francona take Indians' job?

Could Terry Francona be a managerial candidate for the Cleveland Indians?

Bring me that horizon

The Orioles were off today. Today was the "evening" of the schedules as every team that matter to the Orioles now has only six games left. The idle Orioles could have been in a much more precarious position, or a much more advantageous one. It would all depend on who lost and who won. So far today the Yankees, Athletics and Angels all lost. What that means is the Orioles...
