Daniel Bard could be out of the Boston Red Sox's starting rotation before he makes his first start. After watching closer Alfredo Aceves blow his second save and set-up man Mark Melancon serve up a game-winning home run Sunday, Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said changes could be coming. Would former set-up man Bard moving to closer be one of them? "Might be," Valentine said Sunday. The Red Sox fell to 0-3 Sunday after Aceves surrendered a game-tying three-run homer in the ninth and Melancon was tagged for a two-run shot in the 11th in a 13-12 defeat. Bard, who was the set-up man for longtime closer Jonathan Papelbon, was told in the offseason to prepare as a starter. The 26-year-old righthander, whose fastball regularly reaches the high-nineties, has blown 15 of 20 saves opportunities in his career. He held opposing hitters to a .179 batting average last season and was having a sensational year until blowing three saves in a two-week period in September - part ...

Red Sox Manager Bobby Valentine Already on Hot Seat in Boston?

New Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine is not off to the sort of start that anyone wanted to see, especially considering how disappointing last season finished. But after just three games, could Valentine already be on the managerial hot seat? It may sound ridiculous, but there is a little bit of truth to that belief. Valentine already had his detractors even before...

After three grueling losses to kick off the season, Boston was able to steal a win in Toronto on Monday night. Daniel Bard says you sleep better as a starter than a reliever

On Thursday night, Daniel Bard will make his debut as an MLB starter in Toronto. With the Red Sox bullpen in desperate need of help and Bard already a proven set-up man, he will need to be solid to prove he is valuable to the team as a starter. Otherwise, Bobby Valentine will face immense pressure to use the righty to solidify what looks like a shallow bullpen. Among many other reasons...

Red Sox Live Blog: Daniel Bard Takes Mound for First Career Start in Toronto

8 a.m. ET: This is arguably the most talked about start for the Red Sox in quite some time. In the second game against the Blue Jays (2-2), the Red Sox (1-3) will have Daniel Bard on the mound as the 26-year-old officially begins his conversion from reliever to starter. It will signal Bard’s first start since 2007, when he was in the minors. But there is more on the line for Bard...

Daniel Bard Should be the Red Sox Closer

Daniel Bard should be the Red Sox closer. Not much more can be said as the Red Sox bullpen has lost their second game of the season just three games into 2012. First it was Alfredo Aceves, and then today it was Aceves again and Mark Melancon. Despite the loss of Jonathan Papelbon to the [...]

Quote of the Day

"Right now he's starting tomorrow for us. If he can do it, there's a great long term benefit." -Ben Cherington on Daniel Bard.

VIDEO: Boston prospect Iglesias makes diving catch

Coming into the spring, the Boston Red Sox had an internal debate between general manager Ben Cherington and manager Bobby Valentine on who the team's starting shortstop should be. Cherington preferred veteran Mike Aviles, who has a heck of a bat, but isn't a very good fielder. Valentine was more partial to prospect Jose Iglesias, who cannot hit at all at this stage in his...

Enemy Chatter: The Sox win game 3 if they had Bailey

I often wonder what opposing teams, their beat reporters and bloggers are saying about the Red Sox after playing the Red Sox. Here's a dose of 'enemy chatter' from Detroit. "I think you put everything in perspective," said Leyland, who was trying to feel good about a series sweep as he thought about those early leads and Scherzer's tumble. "We...
