Boston Red Sox owner John Henry says catcher Jason Varitek always will have a home in the organization.
The team isn't expected to keep Varitek after signing Kelly Shoppach on Tuesday to back up Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Varitek has played in 15 seasons for the Red Sox, serving as captain since the 2005 season.
He could keep playing, but Henry said Thursday he always will be welcome with the Red Sox no matter what he decides. He said Varitek has been a huge part of the franchise's history so should be part of its future.
Henry also said he'd been trying to reach Varitek.
He made his comments at the Rhode Island State House, where he attended a news conference announcing a scholarship program sponsored by the Red Sox Foundation.

Cubs Interested In Old Boston Veterans Jason Varitek & Tim Wakefield
As most of the fun Cubs rumors continue to swirl around Prince Fielder and Yu Darvish, it appears as if they could have interest in a couple of old Boston veterans.

Red Sox Sign Kelly Shoppach; Arrivederci Varitek?

Old men love rivers
This was inevitable. With Varitek out of the picture in Boston, and the Sox showing zero interest in retaining Wakefield, it was only a matter of time before Theo and Hoyer started mulling the idea of bringing the two to Chicago.

Does Jason Varitek Have Anything Left to Offer?
By signing Kelly Shoppach the Boston Red Sox seem to be indicating that the Jason Varitek Era is at an end. Varitek was already a part-time player in Boston, mostly serving as the lesser half of a catcher platoon with fellow switch-hitter Jarrod Saltalamacchia in 2011. Saltalamacchia is sticking around, and Shoppach is also the right-handed half of a platoon. It appears that there...
