It’s been a pretty turbulent year for Boston Red Sox pitcher John Lackey, but next year might even be worse. This is because the right-hander is probably going to miss the entire 2012 season due to upcoming Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.Ben Cherington, the New Red Sox general manager, said Lackey’s pretty excited about getting the surgery done and what the future holds once he’s fully recovered from it. Cherington added that Lackey knows he had an off year in 2011 and is a lot better than he showed this season. Cherington said he’s looking forward to a new and improved pitcher when Lackey returns to the lineup in 2013.Lewis Yocum, who’s the medical director for the Angels, is scheduled to perform the surgery on Lackey and consulted with the pitcher after getting the results of his MRI at the end of the season.
