The Boston Red Sox placed reliever Bobby Jenks on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a muscle strain in his back. Jenks left Tuesday's game against the New York Yankees after throwing just four pitches. It was his fourth appearance since missing nearly the entire month of May with a right biceps injury. The burly 30-year-old has struggled in his first season with Boston, posting a 2-2 record with a 6.57 ERA in 15 appearances. The Red Sox recalled catcher Luis Esposito from Triple-A Pawtucket to serve as a backup for Wednesday's game. Boston starting catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia will miss Wednesday's game with flu-like symptoms. He was sent to the hospital to be checked out Wednesday.
