Derek Lowe went 3-0 with a 1.86 ERA in the 2004 postseason for the Red Sox. With only two days rest, he beat the Yankees in Game 7 of the ALCS to put the Red Sox back in the World Series for the first time in 18 years. The Red Sox beat the Cardinals in the World Series that year. And Lowe certainly earned his ring.

In April, that ring was stolen from Lowe’s Fort Myers home during a burglary in which Lowe lost roughly $90,000 worth of property. More than the tangible value, I’m guessing (hey, I’ve never won one) that the ring had infinite intrinsic value.

Lowe now pitches for the Cleveland Indians. The Indians were in Boston this weekend and Lowe had a Fenway Park homecoming. Before Saturday’s game, the Indians travelling secretary called into the Indians clubhouse to tell Lowe that someone wanted to give him something. That someone was Red Sox principal owner John Henry, president and CEO Larry Lucchino and chairman Tom Werner. That something was a new 2004 World Series ring.

Before Sunday’s game, Lowe spoke to the media:

“You know me, I can talk. But it was one of those moments where I didn’t even know what to say. It wasn’t like they just sent over a bat boy or sent it over. All three of them came over to give it to me. They said some really nice things. ”I just don’t want it to go unnoticed. I knew there was an opportunity for me to buy another one, but to have all three of them there when they gave it to me really meant a lot. It’s something I’ll never forget. It almost means more this time because it was a selfless act on their part. I just want people to know they did this.”

Definitely a classy move by the Red Sox front office. The gesture was classy in itself but for three top executives to personally deliver the hardware to Lowe was a great added touch. It just goes to show you how much the organization appreciated Lowe’s efforts to bring them their first World Series in 417 years.
