Boston Red Sox righthander John Lackey apologized for his word choice during an interview this week.
Lackey told the Boston Globe that he thought it was "retarded" to put too much stock into some Red Sox starters drinking beer and eating fried chicken in the clubhouse last year.
On Tuesday, the 33-year-old Lackey issued a written statement apologizing for his comment.
"I apologize for my thoughtless choice of words that appeared in print earlier today," he wrote. "I meant no harm, and I am sorry to all I offended."
Sidelined following Tommy John surgery, Lackey will not pitch this season.
