Found January 19, 2012 on Fenway West:
If you happen to live anywhere near New England, the Red Sox are going on a road trip this weekend. The road trip will include a bunch of Sox memorabilia including the Sox WS trophies, Wally and a Sox player. Ryan Lavarnway and Mike Aviles will be at different events throughout the weekend. Participants will also be able to get a voucher in order to buy up to 4 tickets before they go on sale to the public next weekend. The events will be very kid and family friendly, as there will be a balloon artist and face painter there to entertain the kiddos. And...if anyone out there is a singer, you can participate in Sing Your Way to Fenway. You can sing the national anthem and if you make the cut, you have the chance to be able to sign the anthem at a game at Fenway during the 2012 season. I went to one of these events a couple of years ago and it was fun. I am hoping to be able to get to the Vermont stop on Saturday since it is the closest one to me. If you have some free time t...

Aviles likes right field

The outfield is Mike Aviles' only answer for a decent amount of playing time in 2012. The Sox have yet to add a long-term replacement for J.D. Drew in right and there is a possibility of time on the DL for Crawford. He is sure to get some fill-in time in the infield, but he may now prefer the outfield grass for the future. Projo: "I was playing every day in right field...

Ryan Lavarnway has ranked 8th among catcher prospects in the majors. Who topped the list? Former Yankees prospect and current Mariners minor-league catcher, Jesus Montero. It's not like the Yankees needed a catcher anyway, with all...

Is Lavarnway the Answer?

This weeks's Globe Sunday Baseball Column by Nick Cafardo spotlights Sox catching prospect Ryan Lavarnway. Lavarnway had a big season behind the plate in 2011. Between Portland and Pawtucket, he hit 32 homers, 93 rbi's, and had an on-base percentage of .939.In 17 games with the Sox, he hit only .231. However, Cafardo cites a situation that shows Lavarnway might be the take...

Ryan Lavarnway Overcomes Stomach Virus, 'Embracing the Challenge' of Winning a Job

BOSTON -- When the Red Sox signed Kelly Shoppach in December, it didn't just affect Jason Varitek's future. The acquisition presumably halted Ryan Lavarnway's ascension to the majors. With Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Shoppach slotted to catch, Lavarnway's status with the Red Sox remains at the mercy of the staff. Before the 73rd Boston Baseball Writer's dinner on...

Jacoby Ellsbury & Mike Aviles Sign 1 yr deals with Sox

The Red Sox signed both Jacoby Ellsbury and Mike Aviles to one year deals avoiding arbitration. There are 4 arbitration eligible players left that have not signed deals: Alfredo Aceves, Andrew Bailey, Daniel Bard and David Ortiz. The Sox have not gone to an arbitration hearing since 2002 and I imagine they will work out deals before any of those players see an arbitration hearing...

Lavarnway trying to earn everything he can get

Ryan Lavarnway was recognized at the Boston Baseball Writers' Association of America dinner Thursday night as the Red Sox's top prospect in 2011. He will get to Spring Training nearly three weeks early with the other catchers to participate in catching instructor Gary Tuck's exhaustive drill camp.

Carl Crawford's Injury Could Give Mike Aviles, Ryan Sweeney More Opportunities to Contribute

The news of Carl Crawford's injury came as something of a surprise to many Red Sox fans. However, thanks to some added depth, the Sox may be able to get by until the All-Star outfielder returns. NESN.com's Red Sox reporter Didier Morais talked about the wrist injury that may sideline Crawford through Opening Day, and he said that the injury should give players like Mike Aviles...

Lots of Sox News For Mid-January (And Some Non-Sox As Well)

Jacoby Ellsbury and Mike Aviles both avoided arbitration and signed one-year deals. Ellsbury signed for $8.05 million and Aviles for $1.2 million. That still leaves Alfredo Aceves, Andrew Bailey, Daniel Bard and David Ortiz unsigned.Papi and the Sox are far apart. It was reported that Ortiz wants $16.5 million, and the Sox are offering $12.65 million. I would bet the ranch they will...

Player Comparison

Take a look at these numbers and tell me who seems like the better prospect:Player A - 463 AB/ 18 HR/ 67 RBI/ .288 BA/ .348 OBP/ .814 OPSPlayer B - 264 AB/ 18 HR/ 55 RBI/ .295 BA/ .390 OBP/ 1.002 OPSPlayer A is two years younger than Player B but you cannot tell me that his numbers are better than Player B's. Both players are about the same size and both players play the same...

Reaping What You Sow: The Good of the Top 100

I have no idea how Keith Law, Kevin Goldstein, Baseball America, and the many other prospect gurus do it. How do you possibly put all these players in order? How do you compare hitters with pitchers? How do you compare first baseman to outfielders across the minor-league spectrum? It’s a monumental task that requires a lot of parsing, and it’s parsing that I, ultimately, think...
