One day after infielder Niuman Romero ended three innings with runners on base in the Red Sox one-run loss to Tampa Bay, he was designated for assignment and replaced on the big league roster by Ryan Shealy.
Shealy is a 6-5, 230-pound slugging first baseman who was once a top prospect for the Kansas City Royals. He spent the first part of the 2010 season with the Durham Bulls, Tampa Bay’s AAA affiliate in the International League, but exercised a June 15th opt-out in the hope of finding a situation where he’d get more playing time.
Shealy has been swinging the bat well and provides the Red Sox with some insurance just in case 1B Kevin Youkilis’ ankle continues to cause him trouble.
Shealy said he opted out of his Tampa Bay contract because the Tampa organization is “loaded with corner infielders - even in Triple-A - so I thought this was a better opportunity just to get some at-bats.”
