Josh Beckett gets a huge start on Saturday against the Rays Games Friday 7:10 PM Rays (Cobb 1-0) @ Red Sox (Lester 3-3)
Saturday 7:15 EST Rays (Price 6-3) @ Red Sox (Beckett 4-4) Sunday 1:35 EST Rays (Hellickson 4-1) @ Red Sox (Buchholz 4-2)
Story The last time these two teams met, it was a two game series in Tampa and the Sox were just starting to make their run back into the American League East Picture. Now the Red Sox are right back in it. They sit 5.5 games back of the Orioles at the just-past-the-quarter-way mark of the season and have won 7 of their last 10 games. This team was left for dead about a month ago and have shown that they can still make a run at the division title. With Jacoby Ellsbury and Carl Crawford coming back soon, this team can still be better. The Enemy The Rays have kept pace nicely going 6-4 in their last 10. They are in first place in the wild-card race but are only a 1.5 games ahead of the Boston Red Sox. If they aren’t careful, they could lose that lead this series. A big story is going to be Alex Cobb’s start on Friday. Cobb was born in Boston and is making his first start of his young career in the city. Could be a nice story for the kid if he comes in and gets the win. Question: Can Josh Beckett be a big game pitcher, again? It’s been two weeks since the golf incident, and Josh Beckett has responded to the hecklers by having his two best starts of the season and maybe turning the corner on the season. Saturday night is another huge start for him. With the wild-card in reach, he goes up against Rays ace David Price. Another quality start from Josh Beckett and he might turn those pundits back into fans. Who wins?: The Red Sox are at home and are playing their best baseball of the season. I see them losing on Sunday to Jeremy Helickson, but that’s it. Sox continue to gain ground by winning 2 of 3.
