Mariano Rivera showed up to camp in the final season of his contract at age 42 and made it sound like this may be his last season. Apparently he was telling friends this entire time that he planned on pitching again in 2013, according to Bob Nightengale of the USA Today.
Nightengale spoke with Reggie Jackson, who said that his season ending ACL injury may want to make him come back even more now.
“I think he would definitely like to,” Jackson told Nightengale. “I’d think he’d like to come back and retire on his own terms. He’s still got a great body. He’s still a great pitcher.
“You don’t want to exit this way.”
This is certainly a positive turn of events. Still, at his age, a torn ACL and a damaged meniscus may be enough to keep him from making a comeback. Rivera is very proud as a player and while he may be able to comeback at 80 percent or so, is he really willing to do that?
It’s hard to get hopes up too high though as he is 42 and a return is far from guaranteed. Still, it is great to hear that there is hope that we haven’t seen the last of the player many Yankee fans endearingly call God.
