Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Jason Grilli insists he's not throwing any differently than he has at any point in his nomadic career.
Maybe, but the results are certainly different.
The 35-year-old set-up man has been the linchpin for one of baseball's better bullpens. Working almost exclusively in the eighth inning, Grilli is 1-1 with a 1.80 ERA in 21 games while developing into a strikeout pitcher.
Grilli has fanned at least one batter in all but one of his appearances this season and his strikeouts per nine-innings ratio is a staggering 15.8, nearly six above his career average. It's heady territory for a player the Pirates claimed off the scrap heap last season.
The former first-round pick says he believes his best days are ahead of him and says being humbled as a young player was a gift.

Pirates activate Cruz, place Morton on DL
The Pittsburgh Pirates have activated right-handed reliever Juan Cruz from the restricted list and placed right-handed starter Charlie Morton on the 15-day disabled list, the team announced Friday. Cruz was placed on the restricted list four days ago. He has a 1-1 record with a 1.45 ERA in 20 games this season. Morton has been suffering from right elbow inflammation. His DL stay...
Pirates 2012 Mock Draft
Neal Huntington seems pretty sold on the notion that it’s impossible to trade for offensive help before the All-Star Break. So maybe that means he’s going to look for it in Monday’s MLB First-Year Player Draft. Not only does MLB have the longest named entry draft, they also have about five drafts a year with about 100 rounds in them. It’s basically impossible to do a mock...
Pirates place Nate McLouth on release waivers
The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed struggling outfielder Nate McLouth on release waivers according to Michael Sanserino of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. If he clears waivers, he will be given his unconditional release.
McLouth was designated for assignment by the Pirates last week. The 30-year old outfielder hit .140/.210/.175 with 2 RBI's and a 9 OPS+ in 57 AB's for the Pirates...
Burnett hides Pirates’ lack of hitting with a W
Just when the Pirates finally kissed the .500 mark, it slapped them in the face and ran off. It turns out as that has been the case the last 100 years for the Buccos, it was just playing hard to get. After the Pirates secured a 2-1 victory last night in typical minimalist offensive fashion, they hope to take it a little farther this time around.
The Bucs got off to a less than...
Matt Hague salvages A.J. Burnett’s stellar start
Final: Pirates 2, Reds 1
WP: A.J. Burnett (4-2, 3.60 ERA)
LP: Johnny Cueto (5-3, 2.54 ERA)
SV: Joel Hanrahan (13, 2.37 ERA)
A.J. Burnett gave up a lead off double to Zack Cozart, who eventually scored due to an Pedro Alvarez error. Burnett then retired the next 17 batters to keep the Pirates in the game. He gave up just that one unearned run over seven innings while giving up just...
Juan Cruz is back but Chucky Mo just hit the DL
The good news is Juan Cruz didn’t go all Raul Mondesi on the Pirates and he returned to the team after his Dominican adventure today. The bad news (maybe it’s not bad…we’ll see) is Charlie Morton has been placed on the 15 day disabled list to make room for Cruz on the roster.
The Buccos are calling Chuck’s injury ”elbow inflammation” but according to the Post-Gazette’s Bill...
Charlie Morton to the disabled list, the Brewers loom
June starts out with some bad news for the Pirates; Charlie Morton is headed to the disabled list thanks to some elbow inflammation. Given the way that Morton's pitched this year, it's probably a good thing for him to get some rest and then work on whatever it is that he and the coaching staff needs worked on. Juan Cruz, back from attending to personal business in the Dominican...
Pirates 8, Brewers 2
The Pittsburgh Pirates scored six runs off Randy Wolf in the third inning, then went on to pound the Milwaukee Brewers 8-2 on Friday night.
Ryan Braun left the game with a right hip strain, after sitting out Thursday night's game because of lingering tightness in his right Achilles tendon.
Kevin Correia (2-5) gave up two runs and five hits in 5 2-3 innings for the Pirates,...
GAMEDAY: Pirates at Brewers
Pirates (25-25) at Brewers (23-28)
8:10 PM EST–Miller Park, Milwaukee
Here is the MLB.com Gameday
TV: ROOT Sports
Dun dun dun. Time for the Brewers and dreaded Miller Park, where the Pirates are an absurd 4-38 in their last 42 games. That is unfathomably awful. You know that, I know that, everybody that follows either of these teams knows that. It has to stop eventually, right...
Making a statement in Milwaukee
The Pirates were able to keep on rolling on Friday night, despite the dreaded visit to the place that has haunted them for years. The Bucs and Brewers did indeed look like very different teams from the ones we’re used to seeing when they match up, and for Pirate fans, that was a beautiful sight.
The game started out like a typical Milwaukee mess, though. Jose Tabata drew a leadoff...
Remember .500? Yea, that was nice
Well, that didn’t take long. The Pirates got their record back to .500 and stayed there for all of 32 hours thanks to last night’s 8-1 loss to the Reds. It would have been even shorter but the game was delayed for 2 hours because of rain. They should’ve just canceled it and made today’s game a doubleheader – who wants to wait 2 hours for the first pitch and then have to...
Pirates-Brewers Preview
Maybe the Pittsburgh Pirates' fortunes at Miller Park are taking a turn for the better. They are in position for a rare series victory in Milwaukee, with Ryan Braun's status in doubt.
The Pirates can capture a road set against the Brewers for the second time in the last six seasons Saturday night, and it's not clear if Braun will play.
Pittsburgh (26-25) won for the...
