Though the reports are still few and far between, it looks like the Cubs have grabbed the last major prize out of Cuba off of the free agent market, at least unofficially.
After Monday’s early news that the Oakland A’s had jumped out of nowhere to sign Yoenis Cespedes, Jorge Soler was the only one of the three biggest Cuban players to make the move to the Major Leagues.
The Cubs had already signed one of the three, and the only pitcher, in 18-year-old Gerardo Concepcion. Now it looks like they’re set to add Soler to the mix as well.
The reports aren’t entirely clear yet, but it looks like the Cubs will sign Soler for three or four years, to the tune of $27.5 million. He’s not expected to play any higher than Single A ball this season, though it’s not likely to take too long before we’re hearing about this kid making the move to the bigs.
Soler is listed as a centerfielder right now, but is expected to make the move to one of the corners as h...

Cubs Go Solar
This all seems still seems a little less than 100%, but there was a report early in the evening from the Tribune and Dave van Dyck saying the Cubs are "expected" to sign Cuban outfielder Jorge Soler according to "multiple reports" from the Dominican (it's more fun if you read that with air quote hand gestures). The folks at Cub Hub seemed to have heard from...
Cubs 2012 Roster Outlook: Tony Campana
In only 95 games last season, Tony Campana finished 28th in the league with 24 stolen bases. With a full season in 2012, he figures to easily crack the top 10 and establish himself as one of the leagues’ elite base stealers.
So what else will Tony Campana bring to the table for the Cubs? It seems unlikely he will be a starter, with Soriano, Byrd, and DeJesus being the early...
Matt Garza Can Absolutely Be Cubs’ Ace For The Future
It’s no secret that the Cubs have more than flirted with the idea of trading stud pitcher Matt Garza this winter.
They’ve been rumored to have been close with the Detroit Tigers, and have supposedly held discussions with a number of other teams, including Toronto, Boston, and the Yankees.
But Garza remains a Cub. And barring something unforeseen, he will be when the Cubs...
Cespedes Was Overrated, Soler is the New Flavor of the Month
I was trying to get my prospect list-mania article up and then Firefox ate half my work. I'll save it for a future date. In the meantime, now that the A's have signed outfielder Yoenis Cespedes to a 4/$36M deal, I'm comfortable calling him totally overrated. Jorge Soler is the real prize of the Cuban "draft class" and the guy the Cubs should be pursuing. I&...
Retooled Cubs are ready to begin camp
The new Chicago Cubs brass, which includes Theo Epstein, Jed Hoyer and Dale Sveum, has begun retooling the roster this offseason by replacing some key players. The Cubs are set to open spring training in Arizona on February 18.
Campana seeks fast start to first camp
You thought outfielder Tony Campana was fast last year? Now, he's faster. He's also stronger and well aware of what he needs to do to make the Cubs' Opening Day roster.

Cubs set sights on Cuban OF Jorge Soler
With the Oakland Athletics’ signing Monday of touted Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes, the focus of the Cuban market turned to outfielder Jorge Soler and the Cubs’ intensified pursuit of him. As reported by the Sun-Times in November, multiple baseball sources said the 20-year-old Soler was the Cubs’ more desired target, even as they scouted and vetted Cespedes this winter...
