The Seattle Mariners are closing in on a deal with Japanese shortstop Munenori Kawasaki. The Seattle Times, citing sources, reported that Kawasaki is expected to sign a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. The 30-year-old Kawasaki batted .267 for the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks, who won the Japan Series championship. A left-handed hitter considered similar to Ichiro Suzuki, he has batted over .300 five times.
