Ever since it was released on Metallica’s 1991 self-titled album, “Enter Sandman” has always been the kind of song made for arenas and stadiums. It’s oft used as pump-up music before games or at crucial moments within them, and probably its only true analog in rock music is Guns N’ Roses’ “Welcome to the Jungle.” For years now, the song has also been associated with Yankees closer Mariano Rivera as his entrance music. As has been common knowledge all season, the great Rivera will be retiring at the end of the year, and on Sept. 22, New York will be holding a pregame ceremony in Rivera’s honor. As the New York Daily News points out, on Sept. 21 Metallica will be playing a special one-off concert at Harlem’s Apollo Theater to promote their upcoming 3D concert film, but that happens to mark the end of their current touring schedule. Likewise, it bears pointing out that Yankee Stadium is just four blocks and three stops on the 6 train away from the Apollo — probably about a 20-minute commute total. So, as the Daily News asks, “Might Metallica do a one-song set at Yankee Stadium as part of the ceremony?” A Yankees spokesperson could not give any details of the ceremony, according to the Daily News.
