The Washington Nationals have called up prospect outfielder Steve Souza, Jr. from Class AAA for Monday’s make-up game versus the Baltimore Orioles. According to MLB.com’s William Ladson, the Nationals will place Nate McLouth on the disabled list to accommodate Souza to the roster. The #Nationals are recalling Steven Souza from Triple A Syracuse. The #Nats will likely put Nate McLouth on the disabled list. #MLB — William Ladson (@washingnats) August 3, 2014 Nate McLouth has shoulder issues. #Nats #Nationals #MLB — William Ladson (@washingnats) August 3, 2014 Souza was pulled after the first inning from the Syracuse Chiefs’ loss on Sunday afternoon. Souza hit a single off the rehabbing New York Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda in the first. Nats OF prospect Steven Souza was pulled in the first inning at Class AAA Syracuse. No word on why. Doesn't sound like an injury. — Adam Kilgore (@AdamKilgoreWP) August 3, 2014 Following the Nationals 4-0 win over the Philadelphia Phillies, Matt Williams claimed to not know anything of the possible roster move. “Not that I know of,” Williams said. “We’ll have to go in and make sure that he’s okay. Right now, we’re not making a roster move. We’ll see what the reason for that is.” Entering Sunday, Souza led the International League in hitting .352/.434/.599 with 18 home runs and 70 RBIs in 385 plate appearances this season for Syracuse. MLB.com ranks Souza as the Nationals No. 5 prospect. Souza was called up twice to the Nationals earlier this season, going 1-for-8 with a walk as he replaced the injured Scott Hairston and later Denard Span. The Nationals have been hesitant to call Souza up beyond his first stint with their depth in the outfield. Instead of backing up the combination of Jayson Werth, Span, Ryan Zimmerman, and Bryce Harper, the team opted to keep him in the minors to get at-bats on a regular. But with Zimmerman already on the disabled list and now McLouth, the team has turned to Souza. The post Report: Nationals to call up red-hot prospect Steve Souza, Jr. appeared first on KCM SPORTS.
