According to ESPN's Jayson Stark, contract negotiation talks between the Phillies and lefthander Cole Hamels are beginning to pick up quickly.  According to Stark's sources, the club and Hamels and his agent John Boggs have begun to seriously negotiate as the club pushes to get Hamels signed before the July 31 trade deadline. As well as trying to get the deal done, the Phillies have put any potential trade talks with other clubs on hold. Meanwhile, clubs that have been speaking with the Phillies say the team has essentially put trade talks on hold, and have been much more focused on signing the 28-year-old left-hander than on dealing him before the deadline. Another of Stark's sources claim that the Phillies are willing to give Hamels a six-year deal, a first for any starting pitcher in team history.  Like stated before, Hamels' market has been shaped by San Francisco Giants righty Matt Cain, who received a five-year, $112.5MM deal that actually guarauntees h...

Hamels’ Deal Is More About Status Than Money

Cole Hamels, Philadelphia Phillies The rumors are all over. They all say some variation of the same thing. The Philadelphia Phillies are readying the biggest offer that they’ve ever made to a pitcher in their 130 year history for Cole Hamels. CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman reported last night that the Phillies will offer Cole Hamels somewhere in the neighborhood of 5-years and $120 million...

Extend Cole Hamels Now (If You Want To)

If you took MRIs of Cole Hamels’ arm right now, he would probably get a clean bill of health. So would most elite pitchers who were about to receive nine-figure contracts. But that does not mean that they are likely to maintain their health and their elite performance level. Pitchers often fall apart soon after changing teams. I have written about this many times before, most notably...

Report: Phillies to Pitch Hamels $130 Million Deal

(AP) Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com says he’s hearing rumblings the Phillies will over Cole Hamels a contract of $130 million over six seasons in a last-ditch effort to keep him before the trade deadline. Heyman said previously the Phillies would offer $120 million, but that seemed a little low by my calculations. From Heyman: Cain signed a $112.5-million, five-year extension this...

Cole Hamels' Deal With the Phillies Could Be $142-144 Million

The numbers keep escalating but that the Phillies are still talking to Cole Hamels is a great sign. Former Reds and Nationals GM Jim Bowden is reporting that a deal could end up at $142 to $144 million. $144 million over six years would represent a $24 million annual average value. That number would equal Cliff Lee's average salary in his five year, $120 million deal. Hamels...

Cole Hamels, Phillies, Take on Matt Cain, Giants, In Possibly Hamels' Last Home Start as Phillie

In what could be Cole Hamels' last start in a Phillies uniform, it's set to be a great pitching matchup. Hamels (11-4, 3.07 ERA) will go toe-to-toe with Giants ace Matt Cain (10-3, 2.56 ERA) in game two of this three-game series. After dropping the opener last night, 7-2, the Phils will look to even out the series behind the arm of Hamels. In Hamels' last start, against...

Red Sox Should Consider Creative Approach at Trade Deadline If Aiming to Bolster Rotation (Video)

The Red Sox might be interested in adding Zack Grienke or Cole Hamels at the upcoming trade deadline, but the significant prices teams are asking in return could be a deterrent. In searching for some starting pitching help, they might in fact be better off looking elsewhere and taking a roundabout approach to bolstering the rotation. After all, help could be a little closer than...

Report: Phillies Willing To Sign Cole Hamels to Six-Year Deal

It's been noted since Spring Training that Cole Hamels wants a six-year contract wherever he goes. According to reports from FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal and ESPN's Jayson Stark, the Phillies are ready to give Hamels a six-year deal. The reportedly proposed deal is reported to be worth more than San Francisco Giants Matt Cain's five-year deal worth $112.5MM. His deal...

Jayson Stark: If you have a bat, the Pirates are interested in you

This is from Jayson Stark's latest trade deadline update:  If there's a hitter who might have even a remote shot of getting traded, the Pirates have asked about him. One surprising name they took a run at: Kansas City's favorite All-Star folk hero, Billy Butler. But the Pirates are still in a buy-low frame of mind. And the Royals have told a few clubs that inquired...

Top Ten Starting Pitchers on the Trade Block

The trading deadline is less than two weeks away, so we can expect the trade rumors to be flying at full speed. Most of us love sources like mlbtraderumors.com because they throw every rumor out there for us to judge for ourselves. Here at hardballchat.com, we don’t necessarily swim in rumors. Based on who logically will be sellers and solid rumors we will look at...

Phillies at point where they could be buyers not sellers

With their fourth straight win, a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the latest news out of Phillies camp, they could be buyers, or do nothing, as the trade deadline approaches. Oh, there may be a small trade for a reliever, or a minor outfielder trade, but … It is reported in several Web sites that the Phillies have offered $130 million, six-year contract to Cole Hamels...

Texas Rangers Scouted Cliff Lee Today; Could He Be Traded?

We have spent so much time talking about Cole Hamels, maybe we have failed to consider another starter the Phillies could trade: Cliff Lee. CBS's Danny Knobler reported today that while the Texas Rangers really want Cole Hamels or Zack Greinke, Cliff Lee could be on their radar again.  Jim Salisbury of CSN reports that a scout was present for the Lee-Kershaw matchup today...

Trade Deadline: Dwight is right for the angels

With the trade deadline rapidly approaching, the rumors are coming fast and furious. Greinke, Hamels, and Liriano are a few of the names being thrown around as people who may be wearing an Angels uniform after July 30th. However, there is a top-tier free agent that no one is considering. It's high time we start thinking outside the box here. Fans have come up with one million...

Report: Talks Intensified Between Hamels, Phillies

Hamels and the Phils are working. (AP) This could be the most positive news to come about regarding Cole Hamels and the contract talks with the Phillies. Jayson Stark of ESPN.com says talks have intensified between the two sides as the Phillies look to lock up their ace before the trade deadline, and well before he can hit free agency this winter. From Stark: The Philadelphia Phillies...
