The honeymoon for Bobby Valentine in Boston is just about over, if we are to believe a report from Boston Globe columnist Christopher Gasper.

The 2012 season opener is just around the corner and the new Red Sox manager is already at odds with new GM Ben Cherington on how best to use Daniel Bard this upcoming season, and whether or not stud-prospect Jose Iglesias should be joining the team in Beantown or continuing his development in Pawtucket.

The much more experienced manager wants Iglesias manning short-stop when the season begins and wants Bard staying in his role as a set-up man.  Cherington, who replaced Theo Epstein when he departed for the Chicago Cubs, feels that Iglesias is not MLB ready at the moment and needs to improve his game at AAA, and wants Bard as a starter.  Valentine has been extremely vocal to management, apparently, about what he prefers.   Valentine has stated, according to an anonymous source, that Bard will be back in the bullpen when the season begins.

This should be too much of a surprise that a power struggle would happen. Valentine was not the choice of Cherington, whose background is that of a scout and player development.  Cherington wanted to hire Dale Sveum, who happened to join the Cubs with Epstein.

It will be interesting to see who wins this initial power struggle, and who ownership gives final approval for.  My money is on Valentine, who was handpicked by CEO Larry Lucchino.  This wouldn’t be the first time that Valentine has gone toe-to-toe with management, however.  He never had a strong relationship with former Mets GM Steve Phillips when they were both in New York.  Phillips even went as far as firing Valentines coaches without his approval in what many believe was an attempt to get Bobby V to quit.  But as stated before, Valentine already has the endorsement of the CEO and also that of owner John Henry.   Either way this goes down, things are going to remain very interesting all season in the Boston Red Sox clubhouse, even with no beer.
