As the Boston Red Sox prepare for their 2013 spring training, John Farrell and company received unfortunate news regarding their bullpen coach and catching instructor Gary Tuck. According to WEEI’s Rob Bradford, Tuck has called it quits after six years within Major League Baseball. Ironically, earlier this offseason it was reported that the 58-year-old had decided to come back for another year after Bobby Valentine was relieved his services as Boston’s skipper. But ultimately his uncertainty led him to hang up the cleats. The longtime coach not only worked for the Red Sox in his career, but also Boston’s rival New York Yankees. Joe Girardi was one of Tuck’s catching students in New York. The three-time World Series champion — including 2007 with the Sox — as a coach, manager and player will forever be remembered as a well-liked coaching addition during some of the Red Sox’ best seasons. Over the course of his coaching career, he helped in the development of many pitchers, including ...

Mets ink Scott Atchison to a minor-league deal

The writing was on the wall, but it's now official, as Scott Atchison has signed on with a team other than the Red Sox (and not actually in Japan!), as the Mets agreed to a minor-league deal with the reliever (via MLBTR). I'll miss Atch. We paid him next to nothing (less than $1.4 million per B-R) and got three solid years out of him. The first two years he appeared in low...

Red Sox bullpen coach quits

Gary Tuck has resigned as Boston Red Sox bullpen coach for personal reasons, WEEI.com reported. Tuck, the only member of the previous coaching staff to remain from last season after former manager Bobby Valentine’s departure, also was the team's catching instructor. The 58-year-old Tuck also had taken a leave of absense last year, citing personal reasons. "He felt...

Ryan Sweeney Signing Makes Sense for Red Sox, While Mark Hamilton Remains Interesting Player to Watch

Ryan Sweeney‘s first season in Boston wasn’t exactly the smoothest campaign, but with very little to lose, bringing him back makes sense for the Red Sox. Sweeney got off to a surprisingly torrid start in 2012, hitting .373 (25-for-67) through his first 19 games. After that, he fell back down to earth. The outfielder suffered a concussion while sprawling out for a ball in Philadelphia...

Player Profile #122: Jon Lester | SP | BOS

There was a time when I thought Jon Lester was a future Cy Young candidate. The year was 2008. Lester had just come back after missing most of the 2006 and 2007 seasons battling cancer and helped pitch the Red Sox to a 4-0 World Series sweep of the Colorado Rockies. In that ’08 season he went 16-6 with a 3.21 ERA over 210.1 innings and was still building back strength. In 2009...

Daniel Nava Hasn’t Been Asked to Play First Base, But Willing to Be Red Sox’ ‘Water Boy’ If Necessary

Daniel Nava didn’t make his big league debut until he was 27, and he has since spent plenty of time bouncing back and forth between Boston and Triple-A Pawtucket. So when it comes to carving out a role for the Red Sox this season, the outfielder is willing to do anything it takes to stay in The Show. The Red Sox apparently haven’t approached Nava about playing first base, though...

Ryan Kalish to have shoulder surgery

Tough news coming from Yahoo!Sports a few hours ago, as Red Sox outfielder Ryan Kalish will undergo shoulder surgery. According to the source, Kalish is expected to miss Spring Training and a possible return-time has yet to be announced. Kalish missed much of last season recovering from a surgery that repaired a torn labrum in his left shoulder last winter. What's odd...

Ryan Kalish Undergoes Successful Shoulder Surgery

It was learned last week that Boston Red Sox OF Ryan Kalish would need to undergo shoulder surgery costing him a chance to make the team out of 2013 spring training. On Wednesday, the Red Sox announced that Kalish's shoulder surgery was successful. Here's the release: BOSTON, MA - Red Sox outfielder Ryan Kalish underwent a successful right shoulder arthroscopy...

Your Morning Dump... where first base depth is still an issue.

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. Starter: Mike Napoli Alternative(s): Mauro Gomez, Mark Hamilton, Daniel Nava This is admittedly the position where the Sox' depth is most lacking, a considerable issue given that -- even though...

Jays sign INF Andy LaRoche to minor league deal

The Toronto Blue Jays have agreed to terms with infielder Andy LaRoche on a minor league contract that includes an invitation to spring training. LaRoche appeared in 96 games for the Triple-A teams of the Cleveland Indians and Boston Red Sox last season, batting .251 with 20 doubles, 12 home runs and 41 RBIs. The right-handed hitter has played in 403 big league games for the Los...

Mets sign Atchison to minor-league deal

The New York Mets signed right-handed pitcher Scott Atchison to a minor-league deal that includes an invitation to MLB Spring Training, the team announced. Atchison, 36, pitched for the Boston Red Sox in 2012, posting a 1.58 ERA with in 51 1/3 innings. He was non-tendered in November instead of being offered arbitration.

Ryan Kalish

Drafted in the ninth round of the 2006 MLB Draft, the Boston Red Sox have held high expectations for talented outfielder Ryan Kalish. As the Trot Nixon and JD Drew years are now behind them, the team has been searching for a right fielder to succeed the previous champions who patrolled the position. Unfortunately, Kalish's bright career has been consistently sidetracked due to...
