The Red Sox and White Sox already consummated one trade this season. Perhaps another one won’t be too far behind. The Red Sox, who already acquired reliever Matt Thornton from the White Sox, scouted Chicago outfielder Alex Rios and will scout pitcher Jake Peavy closely over his next couple of starts, according to The Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo. The Red Sox reportedly scouted Phillies infielder Michael Young in the past week as well. If the Red Sox are indeed interested in acquiring Rios and/or Peavy, it shows a willingness on their part to take on salary. Rios is under contract for next season at $12.5 million and comes with a $13.5 million club option for 2015. Peavy, who signed a two-year extension in October, is owed $14.5 million in 2014 and has a $15 million player option for 2015 that kicks in if certain guidelines are met. Rios is hitting .270 with 11 home runs, 40 RBIs and 19 stolen bases this season. The 32-year-old is a two-time All-Star who finished 15th in AL MVP voting last year. Rios had a very good 2012 season for the White Sox, hitting .304 with 25 home runs, 91 RBIs and 23 stolen bases. Peavy won the NL Cy Young while with the Padres in 2007. He’s no longer the same pitcher, due in part to injuries, but he is still a solid middle-of-the-rotation starter. The 32-year-old right-hander is 6-4 with a 4.30 ERA in 11 starts this season. The Red Sox have scouted both Alex Rios and Michael Young in the past week. Will be watching Jake Peavy closely in his next couple of starts— Nick Cafardo (@nickcafardo) July 19, 2013 When Aramis Ramirez returns from the disabled list Monday look for the Red Sox and Yankees to be scouting him. Both teams need a RH 3B.— Nick Cafardo (@nickcafardo) July 19, 2013 Have a question for Ricky Doyle? Send it to him via Twitter at @TheRickyDoyle or send it here. Photo via Wikipedia/Jake Peavy
