The Red Sox have made a play for a free agent, and his last name is Ross. But no, this move will not shore up Boston’s outfield situation — the club has locked up another catcher. David Ross has agreed to a two-year, $6.5 million deal with the team pending a physical, according to MLB confirmation of news first reported by Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Catcher David Ross agrees to 2-year deal with @RedSox, pending physical: atmlb.com/ST766i #HotStove—   (@MLB) November 10, 2012 Rosenthal said Ross will be “more than a backup but not a starter.” The Red Sox already have veteran Jarrod Saltalamacchia and youngster Ryan Lavarnway on the roster, with Lavarnway presumably the catcher of the future. Ross played eight games for the Red Sox in 2008 after being traded from the Reds then signed with the Braves that offseason. He’s played in Atlanta since, appearing in 227 games with a .269 batting average as the backup catcher. Ross has a .238/.324/.444 career line. Thumbnail via Facebook/David Ross
