The Tampa Bay Rays have agreed with free agent Luke Scott on a one-year contract with an option for 2013, the Baltimore Sun reported today. The deal is expected to become official after a physical examination, which could be more than a simple formality. Scott, 33, missed the final two months of the 2011 season after undergoing surgery on a torn labrum in his right shoulder. Scott likely will become the Rays' designated hitter, a position held last season by Johnny Damon, who is still a free agent. Scott has been productive when healthy, averaging a .826 OPS and more than 20 home runs over the past four seasons with the Baltimore Orioles. Scott, a left-handed batter, has experience defensively at the corner outfield spots and first base. The Rays aren't sure who their Opening Day first baseman will be; infielder Sean Rodriguez has played the position, but he's not a true first baseman.
