Originally written January 24, 2013 on Fox Sports Wisconsin:
Former Brewers starting pitcher Shaun Marcum has agreed to sign a one-year contract with the New York Mets, according to multiple reports. Marcum, a 31-year-old right-hander, spent the past two seasons with Milwaukee, posting a 20-11 record with a 3.60 ERA in 54 starts. Acquired by the Brewers for top prospect Brett Lawrie on Dec. 6, 2010, Marcum immediately paid dividends in Milwaukee's rotation. He went 13-7 with a 3.54 ERA in 33 starts in 2011, helping lead the Brewers to the playoffs. But his postseason performance is what stained his tenure with the club. Marcum went 0-3 in the NLDS and NLCS, allowing 16 earned runs in 9 23 innings for a 14.90 ERA. Brewers manager Ron Roenicke stuck with Marcum when the club faced elimination in Game 6 of the NLCS, but Marcum lasted just one inning and gave up four runs. He bounced back with a 3.70 ERA for the Brewers in 2012, but a shoulder injury limited him to just 21 starts and seemed to put him out of the Brewers' plans for 2013 when younger pitchers did a nice job in his place. Milwaukee never made a serious effort to re-sign Marcum when he became a free agent in the offseason. Follow Andrew Gruman on Twitter.
