Andre Rienzo’s roller coaster season is expected to reach a zenith Tuesday night as he’s expected to be promoted to the Chicago White Sox to start against Cleveland while the Chicago White Sox entertain offers for pitcher Jake Peavy with Wednesday's 3 p.m. (CDT) non-waiver trading deadline approaching.
Rienzo 25 will become the first Brazilian native to pitch in the major leagues. Rienzo is one of the Sox’s top pitching prospects and his last four starts at Triple-A Charlotte are in line with what the Sox envisioned this season.
During those four starts Rienzo has allowed four runs on 11 hits while striking out 28 in 29 1/3 innings.
His only glaring blemish during those four starts were six walks issued in 5 1/3 innings at Norfolk on July 20. His control was an issue at times during the Arizona Fall League but Rienzo stayed strong enough to finish the AFL season before pitching for his native country in a World Baseball Classic qualifying tournament at Panama.
