The Cubs won two spring training games in a row.  This doesn’t really mean anything, but it’s cool whenever a guy like Mike Olt puts a charge into a ball.  I don’t think that by itself is enough to win him the third base job, but hey, it certainly won’t hurt him! Follow along as we count down to Opening Day.  Next on the lineup… Sweet Swingin’ Billy Williams Billy Williams has a statue outside of Wrigley Field.  If you look at it from the right angle, it’s almost like he’s trying to bat at a ball being thrown by the Ron Santo statue. Sweet Swingin’ Billy from Whistler was a part of the Cubs for all but two years of his career, and was the only one of the Hall of Famers in the 60s and early 70s to actually play in the postseason when he played as an Oakland Athletic in the ALCS against the Boston Red Sox.  Sadly, by then Billy was on the wrong side of old and didn’t do so hot.  But he was consistently one of the best players on the field for the bulk of his career, playing nearly the whole season most years and only slowing down just before his retirement at age 38. The 1961 Rookie of the Year, and perennially in the conversation for most valuable player, Billy also made six All-Star teams and had a few oddities by playing in 164 games in 1965, and 163 games in 1968 and 1969.  This was because there were ties in baseball (blasphemy!) back then, possibly due to the lack of lights at Wrigley Field. Even though he’s elderly now, Billy Williams still finds time to hang out with the Cubs at Conventions and in Spring Training.  It’s very hard to imagine a Cubs event without him, and he is very deserving of his Hall of Fame plaque and his number flag atop the Wrigley foul pole. 26 days…
