New York Yankees president Randy Levine sent a stern message to the representatives of Robinson Cano on Tuesday: we aren’t going to pay you what you want. Cano’s agent, Jay Z, and his team are holding on to their demand for a 10-year, $310 million contract. That’s clearly not going to happen with the Yankees. Levine told ESPNNewYork.com the following on Tuesday: We want Robbie back. We think Robbie is terrific. But we have no interest in doing any 10-year deals and no interest in paying $300 million to any player. Until he gets a little more realistic, we have nothing to talk about. On Monday, Cano’s agents, Brodie Van Wagenen of CAA and Jay Z, were holding firm that they wanted their client to get the biggest contract in baseball history. Alex Rodriguez signed a 10-year, $275 million deal (with $30 million in potential performance bonuses) following the 2007 season. Jay Z met with New York Mets COO Jeff Wilpon, general manager Sandy Alderson and assistant GM John Ricco on Monday ni...

The Yankees won’t pay Cano? What?!?

Yankees free agent second baseman Robinson Cano will be smiling all the way to the bank once he signs his new contract. Will the Yankees pony up $300 million? East is West/left is right/I’ve discovered black is white./Inside out, wrong is right/Back to front and I’m all uptight. – The Kinks. When the New York Yankees announced earlier this week that they would not sign their...

Ben WhiteheadContributing WriterThere is a buzz surrounding this season’s Hot Stove. The “hot question” everyone is asking themselves is, “Will someone sign Robinson Cano to a $300-plus million deal?”That answer is likely, “No.” But there is...

Cano has not budged off $310 million request

Robinson Cano has not budged off his request of a 10-year, $310 million contract, a source with knowledge of the asking price told ESPN New York on Monday. The Yankees remain very interested in keeping Cano, but not at that money or length. If the Yankees keep consistent with their current plans, Cano is going to need to drop about $100M-$120M off the sticker price. Since Cano is...

Report: Robinson Cano's reps, including Jay-Z, meet with Mets

The Robinson Cano free agency tour visited a cross-town rival. Cano’s agents – Jay-Z included — called a meeting with members of the Mets organization Monday to discuss their client, whom they’re marketing as a franchise-altering player, according to multiple reports. It’s unclear how much interest the Mets have in pursuing the free-agent second baseman, but there is apparently...

MLB-Japan league snag puts star in limbo

Robinson Cano is the best free-agent position player on the market. His representatives -- including entertainment mogul Jay-Z -- are deep enough into their offseason planning that they had a dinner meeting with the New York Mets on Monday. Masahiro Tanaka is Cano's counterpart among pitchers, the most sought-after arm on the open market ... except that his market isn't...

Jay Z Meets With The Mets To Discuss Robinson Cano

It seems that Robinson Cano is going to have Jay Z more than just intimately involved in his free agent negotiations. Monday we reported that Jay Z and his Roc Nation Sports Agency, would be intimately involved in Cano’s negotiations for a huge contract. That comes on the heels of a report that the Yankees and Cano have made no progress in contract talks as the two sides remain...

Jay Z Meets with New York Mets about Robinson Cano

When we reported the news yesterday that Jay Z would be ‘intimately involved‘ with the contract negotiations for free agent Robinson Cano, I thought perhaps Hov would be on the outside looking in. Just dropping some advice here and there, but not having a huge role in the process. If last night was any indication, […]

Jay-Z’s need to succeed as an agent will end Robinson Cano’s time with the New York Yankees

The New York Yankees offseason moves need to be aggressive, yet smart, for the team to be able to bounce back into the conversation of teams that can compete in 2014. Even though the Yankees need to be aggressive, this does not mean they need to be foolish. Being foolish would be giving free-agent Robinson Cano a ridiculous 10-year $310 million contract. One of the first thoughts...

Rangers Rumors: Texas targeting another bat, but aren’t going to get Robinson Cano

The Texas Rangers and Detroit Tigers sent shockwaves throughout MLB after completing a trade that sent Ian Kinsler to the Tigers in exchange for Prince Fielder and $30 million. Even though the Rangers added the power bat that they had been coveting, they don’t appear to be done searching for hitters. The Rangers are targeting another hitter, but it’s not going to be free agent...

Report: Jay-Z Trying to Sell Robinson Cano as ‘Michael Jordan,’ ‘Big Rock Star’

Jay-Z wants Robinson Cano to be like Mike. According to Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News, Cano’s agents have big things in mind for their client. Rather than simply marketing Cano as a very good second baseman, which he clearly is, it appears that the five-time All-Star’s camp is swinging for the fences in free agency. “They’re selling him as Michael Jordan, not as...

Mets' GM Sandy Alderson thinks Cano mega-deal not likely

The dinner was good. It was the presentation that was a little overdone. With a long list of needs to rebuild the Mets, Sandy Alderson was willing to listen Monday night when Robinson Cano’s agents, including hip-hop impresario Jay Z, asked to make a presentation to the Mets general manager and front office. Alderson, COO Jeff Wilpon and assistant GM John Ricco had a “nice...

Yankees Considering Signing Infielder Jhonny Peralta

The New York Yankees are hell bent on making responsible decisions this offseason. That means not spending $310 million on Robinson Cano, and it also means looking for an infielder for the left side of the dirt. Even though so much of next season still hangs in the balance of Alex Rodriguez’s lawsuit, and Robinson Cano’s stubborn financial tomfoolery, the Yanks do know...

Hits & Misses: Hawkins Outrage, Fred’s Pain, Jhonny Be Good, Cano Is Loco

Mets Twitter was up in arms last night when the news broke about LaTroy Hawkins signing a a one year deal with the Rockies for what seems like a very reasonable $2.25 million dollars. It looks like Rockies GM Dan O’Dowd has got this moneyball thing down pat. He gets himself a closer for far less than the open market price of $12 million annually. The Mets don’t need a closer...

The Yankees Best (Non) Move of the Offseason

Major League Baseball players are known as “the boys of summer.” Their respective teams battle each other all summer for the top spots in their divisions, and ultimately, a World Series champion is crowned as summer turns to fall. However, these are not the only days that teams compete to become the best. Are you a Yankees Insider? Show us Here. In fact, it could...

Fielder-Kinsler swap may put Rangers in running for Cano

Yankees officials have played a game in recent months trying to imagine who could make a blockbuster offer to Robinson Cano, and have eliminated pretty much every possibility. The one consistent worry has been the Rangers and, perhaps, Texas moved into a better position to make such a play. Texas sent its second baseman, Ian Kinsler, to Detroit for Prince Fielder. The deal was finalized...
