Roger Clemens doesn't need the money, only apparently the gratification that he is still worth a lot of it. Having won two rings in his previous incarnation in The Bronx, he doesn't require another, nor more wins or strikeouts to bolster arguments that he is the best pitcher ever. That case was made years before one more return seemed like a good idea.
Nevertheless, two days before his 45th birthday, Clemens certainly does not need the humiliation of being booed off the mound without getting a third out in an eight-run second inning, even if the necessity for this comeback belongs almost entirely to the Yankees.
