Colorado Rockies outfielder Michael Cuddyer and left-hander Christian Friedrich were placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday. In his first season with the Rockies after signing a three-year, $31.5 million free-agent contract, Cuddyer was hitting .260 with 15 homers and 57 RBI when he suffered a strained right oblique. The move was retroactive to Aug. 1. Friedrich, who is 5-8 with a 6.17 ERA, has a stress fracture in his lower back. He was scheduled to start Sunday against the San Francisco Giants. To fill their roster spots, the Rockies called up infielder-outfielder Matt McBride and right-handed reliever Edgmer Escalona from triple-A Colorado Springs.

Rosario has had his detractors regarding his defense but his 17 homers and serviceable batting average (.243) give him the look of the long-sought-after answer behind the plate, at least offensively. If he can maintain his average with his less-than-stellar defense of...

Christian Friedrich's performance has been up and down during his rookie campaign. His ERA? Mostly up. The news that he is now lost for the season with a stress fracture in his back doesn't hurt him as much as it will Jim Tracy as he tries to manage more awful starting pitching. Friedrich's body will heal and he has some success now to build on as he...
