Denver, CO. In their last home stand vs. the Chicago Cubs, the Colorado Rockies are doing their best to avoid a 100 loss season. The Cubs are only one game worse than the Rockies in the standings, and both teams won’t secure the worst record in baseball due to the Houston Astros terrible record. The Rockies are showing some pride and not just folding up the tents and looking forward to the off season.
Yesterday the Rockies beat the Cubs 10-5 in a rain shortened game that only lasted 6 1/2 innings. The Rockies were led by a band of rookies with Josh Rutledge and DJ LeMahieu leading the way along with Matt McBride and Wilin Rosario each hitting no doubt home runs. With Rosario’s 27th home run he set a new Rockies rookie record for home runs passing veteran Todd Helton for first place all time. Jorge De La Rosa gave up only 2 earned runs in a short 3 innings on his way back from Tommy John surgery and will get one more start to equal 3 starts this season as he looks to work hard in the off season to be the Rockies ace in 2013.
While there are some positives for the Rockies looking to next year, this year has proven to be the worst in Rockies history. The team will likely hit the 100 loss mark as they already have 94 losses and should eclipse the all time club loss mark of 97. With 2 more games against the Cubs and then 3 game series against the Dodgers and Diamondbacks the Rockies will likely lose the magic 6 games it would take to hit the 100 loss mark. If the Rockies bats stay hot they may actually be able to avoid the worst season in club history. With the Dodgers 4.5 games out of the wildcard and Diamondbacks 5.5 games out the Rockies could end both teams seasons with series wins.
The starting lineup continues to be dominated by rookies and short starting pitching performances. The end of the season can’t come soon enough for this team and rumors are starting to flow that Jim Tracy will not return for next season citing fatigue and frustration with this lost season. Rockies fans can look to cheer on the San Francisco Giants in the post season and can look forward to a revamped team in 2013.
