What is the Competitive Balance Lottery?
Jonathan Mayo, MLB.com
...is a mechanism designed to help teams perceived to need the most assistance by awarding extra Draft picks to some of them. The 10 smallest-market teams and 10 lowest-revenue teams will have the chance to win one of six extra selections in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft.
Those half-dozen picks will be made at the conclusion of the first round, following the compensation selections. Because there is obvious crossover between those two groups, there are 13 teams entered into the first-round lottery: the D-backs, Orioles, Indians, Royals, A's, Pirates, Padres, Rays, Reds, Rockies, Marlins, Brewers and Cardinals. The odds of winning a Draft pick will be based on each team's winning percentage in the previous season.
There will be a second group of six picks, to be made after the conclusion of the second round. The teams from the first group that did not get one of the early picks will be re-entered, al...

Left-hander Jonathan Sanchez's nightmarish tenure with the Royals finally ended Tuesday, not long after a cascade of boos rained down on him in his last start Monday, boos that rivaled in intensity those delivered at Kauffman Stadium toward Robinson Cano at the Home Run Derby.
The Royals designated Sanchez for assignment, less than 24 hours after he was rocked for seven runs...
For most of 2011, the Royals and their fans figured they had one of the best defensive shortstops in baseball in Alcides Escobar.
They also figured they had a light-hitting shortstop, a fact they were willing to live with.
As it turns out, the Royals and their fans won't have to live with the latter anymore.
Escobar, 26, has emerged as an offensive weapon, so much so that...
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The Kansas City Royals optioned left-hander Ryan Verdugo to Triple-A Omaha on Wednesday after he was hit hard in his big league debut.
Verdugo gave up six runs on eight hits and two walks in 1 2-3 innings of a 9-6 loss Tuesday to Seattle.
The Royals recalled Cuban left-hander Francisley Bueno, who was 1-4 with a 2.88 ERA in 31 relief appearances with Omaha...
On Tuesday afternoon, the Kansas City Royals designated left-handed starter Jonathan Sanchez for assignment. The Royals, of course, acquired Sanchez and right-handed pitcher Ryan Verdugo from the San Francisco Giants over the winter, in exchange for Melky Cabrera. At the time, the trade came in for criticism and praise on both sides, which suggested it was a fair deal. Obviously...

Jonathan Sanchez, the primary player involved in the trade that sent Melky Cabrera to the Giants, has done little for the Kansas City Royals, so the Royals essentially replaced him on the roster with the minor-league player acquired in the Cabrera trade -- Ryan Verdugo. Verdugo was scheduled to make his major-league debut Tuesday. Sanchez has been designated for assignment after...
Well then, I bet no one would have imagined in April that this would happen. The Kansas City Royals have designated starting pitcher Jonathan Sanchez for assignment. The Royals have also recalled Ryan Verdugo and Vin Mazzaro, and will start Verdugo tonight in Kansas City against the Mariners.
Kansas City traded for Sanchez this offseason, dealing Melky Cabrera to the San Francisco...
The trade -- outfielder Melky Cabrera to the San Francisco Giants for left-hander Jonathan Sanchez and minor league lefty Ryan Verdugo -- seemingly made sense for the Kansas City Royals when it was announced last Nov. 7. Sure, Cabrera was coming off a career year in which he batted .305 with 44 doubles and 201 hits. However, the Royals needed starting pitching, and Sanchez had...
