Billy Butler of the Kansas City Royals has won the Hutch Award, given annually to a major leaguer for his work on and off the field.
The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle announced its decision Monday. The award is for players who exemplify the honor, courage and dedication of former major league pitcher and manager Fred Hutchinson, who died from cancer in 1964 at age 45.
Butler hit .291 with 19 homers, 44 doubles and 95 RBIs last season as Kansas City's designated hitter.
With his wife Katie, they started the Hit-It-A-Ton campaign in 2008 to help feed disadvantaged families in the Kansas City area. Butler donates $250 for each of his homers and $125 for each of his doubles.
Cal Ripken Jr. will speak during the award presentation at Seattle's Safeco Field on Feb. 1.

Moustakas Keeps Fine, Just Use Tin Foil
For the first three months that Mike Moustakas was in the majors last year, he hit .232 with one home run through 250 ABs. Major league pitching looked all Greek to Moustakas. Hehe. Speaking of which, “hehe” is giggling like a schoolgirl, so shouldn’t it be sheshe? On a side side note, if I opened up a Greek restaurant I’d call it, You’re My Gyro. Or maybe The...
Alex Gordon Player Projection No. 100
Key Stats: When I think of Alex Gordon I think of the little engine that could. Not that Gordon is a small guy, at 6'2" and 220 the guy could break me (I'm 6'1" and 175, but probably have a higher percentage of fat). Gordon is the kind of player that people were always projecting for that breakout season that never came. He had power, speed, good defense.....

Reaping What You Sow: Kansas City Royals Top 10 Prospects
Trading away Zack Greinke was a pretty good indication that the Royals were just throwing in the towel on the season, and 71 wins and 91 losses later, we knew they had basically thrown in the towel. That did not mean, however, that they did not utilize the season. Eric Hosmer hit well as a 21-year old. Mike Moustakas had his issues, but you might as well have those when the team...

One Writer’s Royals Resolutions
It’s that time once again when everyone comes up with ways to better themselves. I’ve never been real hot at keeping New Year’s resolutions. But why should I let that keep me from making them?
