Filed under: Royals , MLB Injuries Kansas City right-hander Gil Meche will need surgery on his shoulder after a rough Triple-A outing Monday on his rehabilitation assignment. FanHouse reported the need for surgery via Twitter and shortly thereafter it was confirmed by the team . Meche, 31, began the season on the disabled list with what was termed shoulder bursitis. He returned April 11, made nine starts -- going 0-4 with a 6.66 ERA -- and the Royals put him back on the DL on May 29. He began his rehab assignment July 21 by pitching four shutout innings in Double-A. But on Monday he gave up seven runs on eight hits in four innings, striking out one and walking two. Meche is in the fourth year of a five-year, $55 million deal. He is 29-38 for Kansas City, with a 4.32 ERA.
