Found March 26, 2013 on The Viril View: On the KC Royals:
by John Viril— The Royals have optioned outfielder David Lough to the minor leagues, released veteran OF Xavier Nady and RP George Sherrill and named Luis Mendoza the 5th starter. With these moves, the final shape of the 25-man roster becomes almost entirely resolved. By optioning Lough, who led all Royals hitters with a .455 batting average this spring, the team has clearly opted for a four-man outfield and two-utility infielder bench. That suggests a bench of Jarrod Dyson, utility infielders Elliot Johnson and Miguel Tejada, and either George Kottaras or Brett Hayes as the backup catcher. The only remaining roster question seems to be who is the 7th relief pitcher. With Mendoza winning (for now) the 5th starter role, Bruce Chen goes to long relief. Greg Holland is the closer, with Tim Collins, Aaron Crow, Kelvin Herrera and Luke Hochevar in single inning set-up roles. Since Yost earlier announced he would use seven relievers, that leaves one more open bullpen job. This structure l...

Royals take safe route in Getz over Giavotella

KANSAS CITY, Mo. You could almost hear the moans from Royals fans across the area when manager Ned Yost announced that Chris Getz had indeed beat out Johnny Giavotella for the second-base job. Many fans have been pulling for Johnny G to win the job for close to two years. But as was the case last year, Getz held off the challenger again in spring training. Getzs numbers clearly...

Royals gambling that new-look rotation pays off

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Behind a pair of dark sunglasses, Dayton Moore's eyes dart around a spring training practice field in sunny Surprise, Ariz., trying to take in everything happening all at once. There's the Kansas City Royals' new-look pitching staff going through stretches on an adjacent field, and a lineup filled with promising young position players who've yet...

The Royals Mascot is Clearly Not Safe for Work

So...you wanna be a mascot? Apparently Sluggerrr, the Kansas City Royals' mascot, took part in some off-the-field activities a while back and, well, I'm not sure what the full story is...but, according to Deadspin, this is what we know. Tipster sends tweet to Deadspin with a NSFW picture of Sluggerrr getting a lap dance. Another guys sees that picture...

You’ll have more respect for the Kansas City Royals when you see this...

Anatomy of a Lame Spring Training Position Battle Story

Would it be too hack-tastic to use the experience of the spring season as a figure for the annual rebirth of baseball in Spring Training? Yes. So I won’t. Indeed, I suspect at this point Spring Training feels for others like it does for me: not an exciting time of newness, but as a never-ending sea of pointlessness that makes one ashamed for ever having enjoyed it at all. (I would...

The Best Rotation Since…

I know I have been absent for a while, and you all know that I am prone to hyperbole, but the Royals recent revelation the Luis Mendoza has won the job of fifth starter has brought me out of the shadows…and my hyperbole with it. A month ago everyone considered it a lock that Luke Hochevar would win the fifth spot…and they sent him to the bullpen. A week ago we speculated that...
