Phillies’ GM Ruben Amaro has made the rounds on sports talk radio over the last 24 hours. There has been a familiar theme throughout those appearances, and the Phillies GM said the organization is looking to the future.

Amaro has maintained all throughout this trying season that the Phillies intend to be competitive in 2013 and beyond. Trading away Hunter Pence and Shane Victorino may be the first steps in making that happen for the team.

Amaro contended that it was necessary to shed some payroll in order to provide the Phillies with some financial flexibility. By moving Pence, who would have likely been due somewhere between $14 and $15 million next season, it allows the team to plug some of its gaping holes with free agents.

With the trade deadline past, Amaro said that any additional moves would obviously come during the offseason as the team looks outside of the organization to fill out its roster.

Even with added financial flexibility, Amaro has numerous holes to fill, and not exactly a plethora of money to do so. His job will be a daunting one over the next several months, but the future of the Phillies will depend on how the GM performs.
