The ‘non-Jose Reyes’ talk has continued to pick up around the New York Mets water cooler during the Winter meetings as the club, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, is telling other teams that Daniel Murphy is available for trade:

In conversations with other teams at the GM Meetings in Milwaukee this week, a source confirmed the Mets informed other teams that Daniel Murphy is “available.”

That does not mean Murphy ultimately will be traded, but does explain why Sandy Alderson did not fully commit to Murphy being the primary second baseman assuming Jose Reyes departs and Ruben Tejada becomes Reyes’ successor at shortstop. “

It’s not surprising that the Mets would throw Murph’s name into the ring since some view him as a man without a position.  That being said, make no mistake about Murphy’s skills at the plate as he can flat out rake.  Last year the 26-year-old proved he’s fully capable of hitting for a high average out of the 3-hole and unlike a lot of other Mets, produced when it counted most.  Daniel’s .364 batting average with runners in scoring position was good for second in the NL among players with 100+ plate appearances, behind only Joey Votto of Cincinnati.

Not bad company to be in during your second full season in the bigs.  While I really don’t see Murphy as a second basemen the idea of playing him at third intrigues me, given his work ethic and willingness to learn.  If the kid had a chance to work an entire offseason at one spot and pick up the finer points of that position, instead of being bounced around the field like a beach ball, you have to wonder if his skills in the field would have a chance to approach his talent at the plate.

With it looking more and more likely that New York will hold onto Wright I doubt this is the last we’ll hear of Murphy’s name being mentioned in trade rumors, but in his post (click here to read in full) Rubin is quick to mention that “the expectation is Murphy remains a Met and, in fact, emerges as the second baseman.”
