Rudy Owens started this Sunday for the Indianapolis Indians. Owens bursted onto the prospect scene following his 2009 season when he won his first of two Minor League Pitcher of the Year Awards. He is now starting his 2nd season in AAA and is was ranked the organization’s #13 prospect heading into this season. Owens was extremely impressive on Sunday as he pitched seven scoreless innings. He gave up just two hits and struck out five while not walking a batter. I’ll start off showing all of his strikeouts followed by an inning by inning breakdown. All of Owens’ strikeouts can be found here: Owens had a 1-2-3 first inning with a strikeout and two ground outs. In the 2nd inning, Owens gave up a lead off single but that was all. Something happened to the video of third batter and it didn’t upload, but it was a fly out. In the 3rd inning, Owens hit the lead off batter but settled down to retire the next three. In the 4th, Owens retired the side 1-2-3. In the 5th, Owens started the i...

Gorkys Hernandez Video Recap – 4/22/12

Gorkys Hernandez was at one point rated as the #62 prospect in all of baseball when he was in the Atlanta Braves organization. However, his stock has fallen quite a bit since being acquired by the Pirates in the Nate McLouth trade in 2009. Pirates Prospects ranks him now as the #24 prospect in the Pirates organization. He still possesses and excellent glove and arm and should make...

Jim Callis on Pedro Alvarez

A week or so ago, Baseball America's JJ Cooper published subscriber-only a piece that discusses Pedro Alvarez. An American League scout opined that if he didn't know Alvarez's pedigree, he'd be tempted to call him a non-prospect. Jim Callis follows up on that today by discussing some of the biggest position player draft busts and concluding:  Perhaps if Alvarez...

Bedard is the Biggest Loser

Poor Erik Bedard. The man has posted a very respectable 2.63 ERA, but leads the Majors in losses with 4. 4 starts, 4 losses. This is what happens when you pitch for the Majors' worst offense. The Pittsburgh Pirates should be ashamed.  He's currently on pace for 43 losses. Congratulations Erik Bedard, you are the biggest loser.

Cardinals can't score on Burnett, Pirates

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- A.J. Burnett pitched three-hit ball for seven innings in his injury-delayed Pittsburgh debut and the Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0 on Saturday night. Burnett, who missed the first three weeks of the year while recovering from a fractured right orbital bone sustained during a bunting drill in spring training, walked two and struck out seven. Game 15 Live Chat: Pirates vs Cardinals

Cards’ 10 hits, 5 runs WAY too much for Bucs

It was the same old story for the Pirates yesterday…and we’re getting a little tired of talking about it. The Pirates got another great start from Erik Bedard and another ****** day from the offense that led to a 5-1 loss to the Cardinals in the series rubber match. With the way Bedard has started his stint with the Buccos and with the way AJ Burnett pitched in his debut,...

GIFcap: Dee Gordon Seems To Have Penchant For Homoerotic Teammate Interaction

Dee Gordon and Rod Barajas had their own celebration last year that consisted of Dee jumping into the arms of Barajas to be rocked to sleep. It was … interesting. Well … apparently Dee is trying a different homoerotic teammate interaction in 2012, this time with Andre Ethier. Tony Gwynn Jr.‘s face in the background

Is Bedard this year’s Maholm?

Remember last year how Paul Maholm posted a career-best 3.66 ERA while starting 26 games for the imploding Pirates? If  you do, then you probably also remember that even though he was on a career-setting pace stat-wise before he got hurt, his record ended up at a miserable 6-14. That’s because the offense provided him an average of 2.88 runs of support and in Maholm’s 26...

The Pirates' offense is so bad ... (How bad is it?)

Game 15: Cardinals 5 Pirates 1

I wanted to keep my streak of a recap-for-every-game going since I kind of fell off of the table towards the end of the year last fall and I don't want to head down the rabbit hole again. The problem is that I have nothing unique to say about this game at the moment; Erik Bedard hit some rough spots early but cruised after the fourth inning and pitched generally well. The Pirates...
