Dickey Rumblings: GM Sandy Alderson now believes the most likely scenario involves the Mets keeping Dickey without an extension, tweets Bob Nightengale of the USA Today. However, that's not the team's preferred option. Speaking to the media, Jeff Wilpon reiterated that Dickey could return to the Mets for 2013 without an extension, and made that option sound more realistic than a trade, according to ESPNNewYork.com's Adam Rubin (Twitter link). Dickey himself told Jim Bowden of ESPN.com and SiriusXM that he feels like he and the Mets are "inching toward" an extension (Twitter link). The knuckleballer also spoke to ESPN.com's Buster Olney, repeating that he's "hopeful" about a deal with the Mets, but understands that it's Sandy Alderson's job to make the Mets better (Twitter link). The Mets know they can sign Dickey to a two-year extension worth about $13MM annually, according to Andy Martino of the New York Daily News. ...

Rubin: Teams Asking For Zack Wheeler In Trade Discussions

According to Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com, teams have been asking for Zack Wheeler virtually every time the Mets try to engage in any trade discussions. Rubin says that even when the Mets are discussing platoon or back up catchers, Wheeler’s name has come up. Are you Kidding me? These teams can’t be serious. If general managers are being that delusional, it’s no wonder why...

MMO Mailbag: Where Does Flores Wind Up?

Pete asks: Now that David Wright will be our third baseman until 2020, what is the future of third base prospect Wilmer Flores? Do you think he’ll be moved to the outfield, or will he be traded? Sean Kenny replies: First – Wilmer Flores and outfield should not be mentioned in the same sentence unless it is at the end of the statement “Wilmer Flores with a hard hit into...

Comparing J.P. Arencibia and Josh Thole

During the offseason there has been a lot of talk about the Mets and Blue Jays making a deal. On the surface it makes sense, as the Mets need outfielders and a catcher while the Blue Jays are looking for a front-end starter. The two teams seem to match up pretty well. For me the problem comes in the catching department. Toronto has prospect Travis d’Arnaud, who if he can stay healthy...

MMO Fan Shot: A Letter To The New York Mets

The year was 2000, and the Mets had just lost to the Yankees. Being 20 and in college, I was surrounded by Yankees fans that were giving me the business. I was left with only one reply, “wait until next year!, we will sign A-Rod and take this town over!”. Then the rumblings began about how A-Rod was a 24 and 1 type of player. Well, we all know how that worked out for the Mets...

When Will The Mets Address Glaring Holes In Outfield?

Speaking at the Winter Meetings, Mets’ CEO Jeff Wilpon said GM Sandy Alderson would have an increased budget for 2013 and the team “will be competitive.’’ What exactly he meant by that, he wouldn’t specify. Does it mean the Mets will be a playoff contender or at least a .500-caliber team? Just exactly how much will the budget be increased? When Wilpon spoke of payroll flexibility...

R.A. Dickey's Agent Would Not Be Surprised by a Trade

Should the New York Mets not extend R.A. Dickey's contract and trade him instead, it would not surprise his agent Bo McKinis.  The Mets have been working on a possible extension since the 2012 season drew to a close.  However, the trade market for Dickey is as hot as it will ever be.  There is a chance New York could get a fantastic deal in return. Adam Rubin of ESPN...

Mets targetting Royals prospect Wil Myers

Apparently teams that have come away from their talks with the New York Mets regarding R.A. Dickey have acknowledged that the team’s asking price is extremely high.  First off, I think the following tweet from Andy Martino of the New York Daily News best explains that stance. #bbpBox_275869272276865025 a { text-decoration:none; color:#0084B4; }#bbpBox_275869272276865025 a:hover...

The Unknown Commodity: Bullpen Arms

It seems like year after year the Mets are looking at upgrading their bullpen. Whether it’s Sean Green, Elmer Dessens, Francisco Rodriguez, Scott Schoeneweis, Billy Wagner, Jon Rauch, Ramon Ramirez, Jason Isringhausen, or even D.J. Carrasco. It never seems like the Mets have figured out what makes for a great bullpen year after year. Sure you can develop arms like Atlanta, but...

Free agent pitcher Zack Greinke, the 29-year-old right-hander who, by the end of these meetings, may end up the richest pitcher in history. He is being wooed by the Rangers, Nationals, Red Sox, Angels, Royals, Tigers, Padres and, of course, the Dodgers -  who have become the Yankees of the National League.  Many of those teams if they shut of out the Greinke sweepstakes will...
