TEAMS: New York Yankees, San Francisco Giants
The trade for Chris Stewart was confusing and somewhat bothersome because while George Kontos wasn’t a great arm, he seemed like a lot to give up for an all glove, no hit catcher like Stewart. However if the Giants had their way, the Yankees would have given up even more.
Apparently the Giants initial asking price was David Phelps, who just won a role in the Yankees bullpen as the long man, according to George King of the NY Post.
It’s surprising that the conversation even got past that part without Brian Cashman hanging up the phone because Stewart is basically an automatic out, he was out of options, and about to hit waivers. Somehow the conversation did progress past that point and they eventually gave up Kontos for him.
