Found April 07, 2012 on Bronx Baseball Daily:

The trade for Chris Stewart was confusing and somewhat bothersome because while George Kontos wasn’t a great arm, he seemed like a lot to give up for an all glove, no hit catcher like Stewart. However if the Giants had their way, the Yankees would have given up even more.

Apparently the Giants initial asking price was David Phelps, who just won a role in the Yankees bullpen as the long man, according to George King of the NY Post.

It’s surprising that the conversation even got past that part without Brian Cashman hanging up the phone because Stewart is basically an automatic out, he was out of options, and about to hit waivers. Somehow the conversation did progress past that point and they eventually gave up Kontos for him.

Cervelli would still start if Martin gets hurt

Despite the fact that the Yankees compare Chris Stewart to Jose Molina defensively, it doesn’t seem like they think he’s good enough all-around to be a starting catcher. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that Francisco Cervelli, not Stewart, would play the bulk of the games if Russell Martin got hurt. “I think (Cervelli) would play the...

Not a good start against the AL East for Kuroda

One of the biggest concerns the Yankees had headed into this season was whether Hiroki Kuroda would be able to handle the transition going from the NL West to the AL East. One game does not a season make, but it sure wasn’t a good start for Kuroda Saturday night as he got beat pretty badly by one of the weaker offenses in the division.  “Overall I wasn’t really sharp,...

Yankees play with Harlem Globetrotters

CC Sabathia’s appearance at a Harlem Globetrotters game could have been some foreshadowing for his disappointing opening day start. During a break in their preseason schedule, New York Yankees CC Sabathia, Curtis Granderson, and Nick Swisher participated in a Harlem Globetrotter’s showcase. CC struggled with this version of baseball, as one of the Globetrotters launched...

The Yankees Beat: Opening Day, Mo, and Pineda

It was Opening Day for most of baseball today, but unfortunately not the Yankees. For that we’ll have to wait until Friday at 3. Here is what the blogosphere was talking about today. The Captain’s Blog asks, if the Yankees aren’t playing, does opening day make a sound? I think it sounds kind of like the Red Sox bullpen imploding. The Greedy Pinstripes takes a look at...

Tales of a Yankees fan living in diaspora

“Yankees suck, Yankees suck,” it’s a common chant, but for most of you Yankee fans, it’s something you probably only hear on TV. Me? Well, I’ve been living in what I like to refer to as the diaspora for much of the last fifteen years, so when I get to see my team play live, it’s in road grays and it’s at the opposing team’s stadium. Even my cat, Thurman, is gray...

Yankees claim righty Cody Eppley off waivers

It didn’t take long for the Yankees to replace George Kontos, who was traded for catcher Chris Stewart on Wedneday, in the Triple-A bullpen as they signed righty Cody Eppley for the role, according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. “He gets right-handers out,” Cashman told Hoch. “Obviously, we’ve had a number of things happen. [David] Phelps is obviously up here. We just traded...

Rays try to sweep Yankees in opening series

The New York Yankees are seeking to avoid their first 0-3 start since 1998, although that season turned out just fine. The Tampa Bay Rays, meanwhile, have started with three wins just once in franchise history. The Rays have won five straight at home against the Yankees for the first time heading into Sunday's finale of this opening series. New York has gotten poor...

BBDP April 6, 2012: Dellin Dealin’, Campos Cruisin’

Triple-A Empire State vs. Lehigh Valley. L 5-6. L: Venditte (0-1) Brandon Laird: 1/4, RBI (.143) Colin Curtis: 1/4, K (.143) Francisco Cervelli: 0/4 (.000). I’m worried he might have taken this demotion really hard. Dellin Betances: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, BB, 6 K (3.6 ERA). Excellent outing. The lack of walks is encouraging, and so are the abundance of strikeouts. Pat “Sideshow”...

Rivera has rare blown save, Rays beat Yankees

Mariano Rivera took the blame for a rare blown save. Carlos Pena hit an early grand slam off CC Sabathia, then completed a ninth-inning comeback with an RBI single off the New York closer that lifted the Tampa Bay Rays to a season-opening 7-6 victory over the Yankees on Friday. ''My fault,'' Rivera said. ''I felt good. I don't make excuses. I just left...

25 Yankees, 25 Questions

Opening Day is a time for celebration, a time for joy and good feelings.  It is also a time to evaluate the state of your team (and possibly overreact to an Opening Day loss).  But hey, that’s the fun of it.  Let’s take a look at the entire 2012 Yankees roster and answer the hard-hitting questions everyone wants to know: Infielders 1: Will Teixeira hit .281 this season? ...
