Found February 20, 2013 on Plaschke, Thy Sweater Is Argyle:
I came across a fantastic Russell Martin lot recently and considered whether or not to take it down for the better part of a week. Though Russ is now on his second post-Dodger stop (Yankees, Pirates), he's still one of my favorite players and one of my favorite Dodgers of all-time.I eventually decided to take the plunge on the free shipping auction and nabbed the four cards you'll see today, with the first three being new Martin additions. The first is a Buyback Autograph from 2006 Bowman Originals. The card was originally released as part of 2005 Bowman Draft and is the gold, non-numbered parallel. With its re-release in '06 the card was hand-numbered out of 33 (33/33 for my copy) and signed by the former Blue Crew backstop. My copy was sent by someone to Beckett and slabbed an 8.5 with a 10 John Hancock. The card's biggest flaw - well, some would say the grading is the primary flaw, though it doesn't bother me - is a quite dinged back left corner. I've alway...

Pittsburgh Pirates: 3 Up and 3 Down

If you lock a handful of monkeys in a room, they’ll eventually write Hamlet- or so the saying goes.  For the Pittsburgh Pirates, this is their 21st-straight season of locking in a questionable collection of players, and hoping absolutely everything breaks exactly right for the team to finally cross the elusive .500 threshold.  So is this collection of simians any more promising...

The Pirates need Starling Marte to make the leap

It only takes about ten minutes of watching Starling Marte to understand why being a baseball scout is such a difficult job. Why even the best scouts pile up tons of misses for every diamond in the rough that they unearth. I am not a scout by any means, but since moving North Carolina 5 1/2 years ago I've watched plenty of minor league baseball. Most of that baseball has been...

Clint Hurdle got a contract extension for no reason

The Pittsburgh Pirates have given manager Clint Hurdle a contract extension through the 2014 season, with a club option for 2015. Hurdle's contract was set to expire after the 2013 season. Under Hurdle, the Pirates are 151-173 and have finished in fourth place in the NL Central in back to back seasons. Now, here's why I think this extension is silly: it's not essential...

Brandon Inge underwent shoulder surgery last September, effectively ending his season with the Oakland Athletics.  Since then, he became a free agent and eventually signed a minor league deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates.  Inge is hoping to break camp with the Pirates on their Major League roster, but much of that will depend on the health of his shoulder. It's clear that...
