The Texas Rangers banked on relationships being their No. 1 drawing point to lure free agent right-hander Roy Oswalt.

Based on Oswalt's first comments Wednesday after signing a minor league deal with the club, it certainly appears the relationships paid off. Among those ties: Club president Nolan Ryan worked with Oswalt in 2000 when Oswalt was playing for Class AA Round Rock, a team Ryan owned. Pitching coach Mike Maddux was Oswalt's pitching coach at Round Rock.

"I've got a lot of respect for Nolan," Oswalt said. "He was actually kind of an idol of mine growing up. To get a guy like that to stand up for you and put their stamp on you as a young player, especially being someone that wasn't a high draft pick ... I just had a really good relationship with him. And I love Texas. I got to play there for 9 1/2 years with the Astros.

"I think of (Round Rock) as the place that made me who I am now. Mike Maddux was there. He's the guy that I give credit to for teaching me how to get deeper into ballgames. Before then, I was a six-inning guy trying to strike out 12 a game to try to prove a point instead of throwing eight or nine innings and getting through a game with 100 pitches. That's two guys there that mean a lot to me."

Oswalt will start his path back to the majors at Round Rock, now the Rangers' Class AAA affiliate, on Saturday. He estimated that it would take him three to four starts to get ready to return to the majors.

Maddux, however, intends to be conservative with Oswalt.

"He still has to go through the spring training program," Maddux said. "We're going to work on the side of caution. Get ready one time and not risk any setbacks and have to start over. He's one with that."

The pitching staff looked ready for Oswalt's help Wednesday night. The Seattle Mariners blasted Texas 21-8, tied for the second most runs ever allowed by the Rangers.
