Found August 25, 2013 on Rumors and Rants:
It’s rare that a baseball team dumps its Opening Day starter in the middle of a season, but that’s just what the San Diego Padres did on Saturday. The Padres designated Edinson Volquez for assignment which means he’s more than likely done with the franchise. The team now has 10 days to release him. Volquez was San Diego’s Opening Day starter in each of the past two seasons and is in the middle of a horrific season. The Padres had been very patient with him, hoping he could turn things around, but if anything, he has just gotten worse. Volquez has a record of 9-10, but among pitchers who qualify, the 30-year-old hurler has a National League-worst ERA of 6.01, and boasts the NL’s worst WHIP of 1.67. He has also surrendered a ridiculous 69 walks in 142.1 innings, only Pittsburgh’s Jeff Locke has issued more free passes with 72. Volquez’s WAR of -2.4 is also the worst among all pitchers in baseball. On Friday night, Volquez allowed six runs in just two-thirds of an inning against the C...

Padres Designate Volquez, Recall Brach

After arguably the worst start of his career, the San Diego Padres have cried “uncle” and designated starting pitcher Edinson Volquez for assignment. Volquez, 30, was acquired in a multi-player deal after the regular season in 2011 and has appeared in 59 games for the Padres between 2012 and 2013. All 59 games were ones he had started. Volquez struggled considerably this season...

Daily Friar 8.24.13

Last night did not start off well for the Padres. As Ron Burgundy would’ve put it, “that escalated quickly. I mean that really got out of hand, fast.” The Cubs got on the board early scoring six runs in the first and forcing Padres starter, Edinson Volquez out of the the ballgame after recording only two outs. Fortunately, that would be all the Cubbies would score as the Padres...

D-backs open homestand with series against Padres

The Diamondbacks will see old friend Ian Kennedy in the middle game of a three-game series against the Padres that begins Monday, the opener of a nine-game homestand that for the D-backs has a must-make-a-move feel to it. Kennedy, who won 21 games for the D-backs in 2011, is 2-1 with a 3.20 ERA in four starts since joining the Padres in a deal for Joe Thatcher, Matt Stites and a...

While You Were (Day) Drinking: Game 130 (SD vs CHC)

Sometimes things get a little fuzzy after a Sunday afternoon in the pub. Especially when the game goes 15 innings and you left Petco Park after the 10th inning with the game still tied at zero. Here’s a friendly reminder of what you might have missed while you were (day) drinking. Or (designated) driving home. Long game was long. The Padres managed to beat the Cubs despite the...

About the only good thing that the Cubs have going for them right now is some core young guys that should make them better in the future. The same could be said about the Padres as well. The Padres ran into one of those guys last night in the form of Jeff Samardzija. He was able to limit the Padres only to two runs through eight innings. While they did try to mount another comeback...

Nate Schierholtz hit a three-run...

Cubs can't hold lead, fall 8-6 to Padres

Will Venable and Jedd Gyorko are having the August that Chase Headley had last season. An inning later Jedd Gyorko hit his second homer of the game as the Padres overcame a six-run deficit ...

Padres-Diamondbacks Preview

The San Diego Padres' bullpen didn't have a very restful weekend. The Arizona Diamondbacks' weary relief corps can certainly relate. Following a 15-inning victory on Sunday afternoon, the Padres head to Phoenix looking to further derail the hopes of the fading and potentially drained Diamondbacks. The Padres (59-71) put their bullpen to work early on Friday after starter...
