A week ago we asked you who you thought the San Francisco Giants MVP was in 2013. Despite fabulous seasons from Buster Posey, Brandon Belt, Madison Bumgarner, and Sergio Romo, the overwhelming majority (72%) chose Hunter Pence.
We couldn’t agree more.
With the 2013 season officially in the rearview mirror, it’s time to hand out someaccolades, and there’s only one man deserving of the Giants MVP award: the man who twitches in the batter’s box like a dying spider. A wonderful, hilarious, and lovable dying spider, we might add.
By the books, Pence had a fabulous year. He hit .283/.339/.483 with a .822 OPS. He had 27 home runs, 35 doubles, 99 RBI, and 22 stolen bases (in just 25 attempts). Still, from a strictly analytical standpoint, Pence was not the Giants best player. That distinction belongs to either Posey or Belt, or possibly even Bumgarner.
But the “V” in MVP is essential, and it’s impossible to calculate Pence’s contributions, especially in a down ...
